ECDC’s assessment of 25 February 2020 has identified areas with presumed community transmission for the purpose of identifying suspected cases requiring diagnostic testing according to the case definition. This list will be reviewed regularly.
Country/Area
Assessment of community transmission* Based on statement by health authorities ** Based on an epidemiological situation assessment over a 14-day period
[h=2]Travel to areas with presumed community transmission[/h] The epicentre of the COVID-19 outbreak remains in Wuhan, Hubei province, China. This area accounts for the majority of reported new cases and fatalities. However, the number of confirmed cases reported outside of Hubei and outside of China is rising. In addition, countries outside of China have reported local transmission.
Travellers visiting areas of presumed community transmission should adhere to strict hygiene measures, wash hands with water and soap regularly, or use alcohol-based hand sanitisers. Touching the face with hands should be avoided. People should keep their distance from sick people and cough and sneeze into the elbow or cover mouth and nose. It should be emphasised that older people and those with underlying conditions should take precautionary measures and also adhere to strict hygiene practises.
Travellers returning from areas of presumed community transmission should monitor their health status for a period of 14 days. Should they experience respiratory symptoms, a healthcare specialist should be contacted. People with symptoms should contact their healthcare specialist via telephone first and indicate their travel history before seeking medical attention in person. Symptomatic people should avoid contact with other people until they have seen a healthcare specialist.
