Ebola Scare in DC

The Scientist senior editor, Jef Akst, is communicating via cell phone with her parents, who were on the bus briefly occupied by an ill woman who was later escorted by hazmat teams to the hospital.

http://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleNo/41250/title/Ebola-Scare-in-DC/ More here about the woman's symptoms.

An ill woman who claims to have recently arrived from Africa was taken by ambulance to Virginia Hospital Center, and emergency measures are being carried out to ensure that, if Ebola is at fault, that the virus is not spread, ARLnow.com reported. Passengers on the bus have been in quarantine for the past three hours, but the mood on the bus is calm, according to my parents, George and Barbara Akst, who happened to be on the vehicle when the woman got on and off in the Pentagon parking lot.

The bus was parked and waiting at the Pentagon when my parents arrived this morning around 8:30 a.m. It was the second bus in a row of three, all waiting to shuttle people to this morning’s Change of Command ceremony for the Marine Corps Commandant.

Update (12:30 p.m., October 17): The police have asked all the bus passengers for their names, addresses, and telephone numbers. “Rumor is after they collect our info they will let us go and we will be under a 21 day watch,” my mom said in a text message.

I live in Arlington and the word is the woman was in Sierra Leone so they are very concerned.

Ebola scare closes Pentagon entrance, restricts parking

ARLINGTON, Va. (WJLA/AP) -- The Pentagon police shut down a building entrance and a portion of the South Parking lot on Friday because a woman was sick and told emergency personnel that she had recently been to West Africa, officials said.

The Arlington County Fire Department responded with a HazMat team shortly after 9 a.m. and was treating it as a possible Ebola case. The woman was taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital, where a quarantine tent was set up in front of the building. There was no immediate word on her condition.

Pentagon spokesman Lt. Col. Tom Crosson said that out of an "abundance of caution," all pedestrian and vehicle traffic was stopped across 17 lanes of the huge South Parking lot. The Corridor 2 entrance was also closed until further notice.

Wow, this one is just bizarre.

Lt. Col. Eric Dent, public affairs officer for the Marine commandant, was on the bus that the woman boarded. He said that the bus was bound for a change-of-command ceremony at the Marine Barracks in the District and that the 22 passengers, including the driver, included several Marines, their spouses and other guests invited to the ceremony by the Defense Department.

Dent said that the bus was in the Pentagon parking lot when the woman, who was not dressed as if she were headed to the ceremony, got on board. She walked to the back of the bus, used the bathroom there, then left the bus without touching anyone on board, Dent said.

Afterward, he said, the driver told bus passengers that the woman had thrown up and collapsed outside. He saw emergency workers arrive.

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department (seen setting up biohazard areas at hospital) is one of best in US for HAZMAT. INOVA Fairfax Hospital anticipating cases since the US Africa Leaders Summit in August. Hope it is a false alarm but if anyone can handle it, they can.

Re: Ebola Scare in DC

Apparently she hasn't been tested yet. The county health dept. asked the state health dept. and now they're asking the CDC.

UPDATE: @CDCgov has been contacted by @VDHgov to determine whether testing of this individual is warranted. http://ow.ly/CWkKz

http://news.arlingtonva.us/releases/update:-woman-taken-ill-at-pentagon-does-not-have-ebola

Based on the public health investigation, which included the travel history of a woman who became ill this morning in a Pentagon parking lot, and on questioning of her by medical staff, medical authorities are confident that she does not have Ebola.

Arlington County Fire Department Emergency Medical Services transported the woman to Fairfax Inova Hospital Friday morning, after she became ill in a Pentagon parking lot. The woman had displayed symptoms consistent with the virus and her travel history was uncertain. She was put in isolation at Fairfax Inova Hospital. Arlington County took all necessary precautions to protect public health during this event, including activating its Emergency Operations Center. We are beginning to break down those operations now.

Re: Ebola Scare in DC

Whelp - heres hoping they do an actual PCR test on her to be definitive.

(They didnt. Am seeing twitter chatter that this MIGHT have been a twisted anti-president stunt. I have NO idea. If this were the case it might explain why they were able to dismiss it so quickly but thats pure conjecture)

Re: Ebola Scare in DC

Below is her employer.

I am really pissed off about this. People are enraged over the administration picking an administrator to oversee the complexities involved with running the government response to this epidemic?

What about the rage over this? We are being manipulated into a state of irrational fear.

The really freaky thing, is that we SHOULD have a rational sense of fear, as described by Osterholm. Not this crap.

http://totalspectrumsga.com/

This is what should have us all enraged and it needs to be investigated. This should be a crime for her and her employer.

.

Re: Ebola Scare in DC

Where did you get the information that this is her employer? Not challenging you, just curious.

So is this a hoax, or for real?

Can you cite the source/link for the information on this woman's employer? Or is it your personal knowledge?

Any person proven to be faking ebola should be sent a bill for all of the emergency response efforts - at the very least.

... People are enraged over the administration picking an administrator to oversee the complexities involved with running the government response to this epidemic? ...

No. No one cares if the admin selected an administrator to oversee the complexities involved with running the government response.

They think the admin should have selected someone with some public health experience and/or education.

Not to mention the obvious conflicts of interests of someone who works for a company that has "major stakes" in, among other things, a luxury cruise line and resorts.

The problem with the selection has nothing to do with the pure selection of a functionary.

It has everything to do with cronyism.

Re: Ebola Scare in DC

This is the latest, apparently a woman was sick and this is not some ebola stunt:

"What caused the woman to become sick was unclear."

From that article:

"The woman told officials she worked for Total Spectrum, a lobbying and public relations firm. Its managing director, Steve Gordon"

Steve Gordon personally invests heavily in the GOP and may be a mid level bundler for the party
