The spread of Ebola is a “very serious threat” to the UK, the Defence Secretary has said as he prepares to chair an emergency meeting on how to tighten the Britain’s defences against the deadly virus.

Mr Hammond said that David Cameron regards the threat as “serious” and will discuss which measures need to be taken to protect British people from the virus bother in the UK or in our diplomatic posts abroad.

He said the Government was “very much focused” on dealing with the “new and emerging threat.”

Health chiefs in Wales said yesterday that the condition of the suspected victim is being "closely monitored".

Officials confirmed that the unnamed patient from Cardiff, South Wales, contacted them after feeling ill on their return to British soil.

They were effectively quarantined in their own home and would speak to doctors on a daily basis until the threat was deemed to have passed.

Public Health Wales said the patient believed they "may have been exposed" to the virus.... Snip

She said there was "no risk to the public" posed by the quarantined traveller and stressed that the case is unconfirmed....

Anna Humphries, of Public Health Wales, said: "There are other people in the UK, not in Wales, but we are aware of other people that have come back from affected countries and have been at risk because whatever they have done while they have been over there. They have been in a similar situation and they have been monitored for an incubation period to check they have not gone onto develop symptoms.
"There is a process for dealing with returning travellers and this is an example of that. Quarantine really depends on where exactly they have been."
The details of where the other individuals are quarantined has not been disclosed.
