student absence and illness.

Absences reached more than 13 percent system-wide on Wednesday. Some schools have as many as 16-20 percent of their students absent.

Principals at individual schools will decide whether extracurricular activities will be canceled.

The FFA's annual Farm Day, set for Thursday, is already canceled.

Workers at the schools will step up cleaning and sanitizing efforts while the students are out. The schools are encouraging parents to keep their children home and away from large gatherings.

CLINTON - Anderson County Schools will be closed the rest of this week due to a high number of influenza cases, officials say.

All county schools will be closed Thursday and Friday, according to school system spokeswoman Karen Bridgeman. They hope to reopen Monday.

The system had a 13 percent overall absentee rate today, she said. Clinton Middle School had a 20 percent absentee rate and Clinton High School had an 18 percent absentee rate.

"Per school board policy, principals at individual schools will make decisions about extracurricular activities," Bridgeman said in a press release.

"While the schools will increase specific cleaning and sanitizing efforts while the students are away, parents are encouraged to keep their children at home rather than having them gather in groups," the release said.

More details as they develop online and in Thursday's News Sentinel.

Re: 1 Monroe Co. school + Clinton City Schools closed for illness

CLINTON - The Clinton City School System will be closed Thursday and Friday due to illnesses, officials announced this afternoon.

Normally, there's a 95 percent attendance rate in the system's three elementary schools, said Bill Hodgers, the district's supervisor of instruction.

By Wednesday morning, the attendance rate was below 80 percent, and more children were going home sick, he said.

Hodgers said children were complaining about flu-like symptoms, but it's uncertain whether the illnesses were typical flu or the H1N1 strain now sweeping through schools.

About 850 children attend Clinton City Schools, Hodgers said.
