TEPCO: Japan's Fukushima NPP Not Damaged by Powerful Earthquake

April 7, 2011, Thursday

The Tokyo Electric Power company has announced that the Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini nuclear power plants have not been damaged by 7.4-magnitude earthquake that hit Japan Thursday night.

The earthquake occurred at 11:32 pm local time, its epicenter was located 40 km off the east coast of Japan below the sea bed, Japanese state TV NHK reported.

A tsunami warning has been issued as a result of the new strong earthquake; a one-meter high tsunami is expected to hit the coast of northeastern Japan.

Japan's meteorological agency has urged evacuation of the coastal areas of the Miyagi prefecture.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has announced that the new earthquake has not affected the situation in the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which was badly damaged by the March 11 earthquake ushering into one of the world's worst nuclear crises ever. All TEPCO workers from Fukushima Daiichi and Fukushima Daini have taken shelter, and are reported to be safe.

A spokesperson of TEPCO announced on NHK TV that the company is continuing its water injection of reactors 1, 2, and 3 at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP as well as the injection of nitrogen into reactor 1, which are part of its measures to contain the crisis situation caused by the March 11 earthquake.

The Onagawa NPP, however, has been affected as only one of the three power transmission lines of the plant remains functioning. According to the authorities, it is sufficient to maintain the operations on the spot. The three reactors at Onagawa were turned off after the March 11 earthquake. The Japan nuclear safety agency has announced that no radiation leaks have been detected.

Powerful quake strikes northeastern Japan

A magnitude 7.4 quake occurred off the Miyagi coast, northeastern Japan late Thursday night.

The Meteorological Agency says the quake registered 6-plus on the Japanese seismic scale of 0 to 7 in Sendai and another place in Miyagi prefecture. It says an intensity of 6-minus was registered in wide areas of Miyagi and Iwate prefectures, and that the quake was felt in many regions across Japan......

The Tokyo Electric Power Company plans to resume operations to tackle safety issues at its crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant following a powerful quake on Thursday night.

The utility company says an examination immediately after the latest quake showed no ill effects on the facilities and the operation to inject water into the Number 1, 2 and 3 reactors. Radiation monitors at the plant showed no change in readings.....

2 killed, 132 injured in Thursday's quake

Two people were killed in a powerful earthquake that hit northeastern Japan on Thursday night. 132 others were injured.
The Fire and Disaster Management Agency says that in Obanazawa City, Yamagata Prefecture, a 63-year-old woman was found dead at her home on Friday morning. Fire officials suspect that her oxygen breathing apparatus stopped working when the power supply was cut off.....

Backup systems protect N-plants

We gave this seismic event its own thread because 7.4 is a high number. This may be an aftershock to the earthquake that occurred on March 11, but it had the strength of an earthquake. In addition, we did not know if this was going to result in much damage, or not. We felt the news would best be covered by putting this event on its own thread.
