Workers again victims among 17 dead as factories collapse in another big Italian quake

SAN FELICE SUL PANARO, Italy - Workers at the small machinery company had just returned for their first shift following Italy's powerful and deadly quake earlier this month when another one struck Tuesday morning, collapsing the roof.

At least three employees at the factory ? two immigrants and an Italian engineer checking the building's stability ? were among those killed in the second deadly quake in nine days to strike a region of Italy that hadn't considered itself particularly quake prone.

By late Tuesday, the death toll stood at 17, with several people still missing, including a worker at the machinery factory in the small town of San Felice Sul Panoro. Some 200 people also were injured in the 5.8 magnitude quake north of Bologna in Emilia Romagna, one of Italy's more productive regions, agriculturally and industrially.

Factories, barns and churches fell, dealing a second blow to a region where thousands remained homeless from the May 20 temblor, much stronger in intensity, at 6.0 magnitude.

The area encompassing the cities of Modena, Mantua and Bologna is prized for its super car production, churning out Ferraris, Maseratis and Lamborghinis; its world-famous Parmesan cheese, and less well-known but critical to the economy: machinery companies.

The Italian Red Cross, with the support of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), has determined that external assistance is not required, and is therefore not seeking funding or other assistance from donors at this time.

Summary: An earthquake of a magnitude 5.8 on the Richter scale killed at least 17 people in northern Italy on Tuesday, 29th May, damaging buildings and leaving 14,000 people homeless in the Emilia Romagna region north of Bologna, in one of Italy?s agriculturally and industrially most productive areas. The epicentre of the earthquake, which struck at depth of 9.6 km (6 miles), was less than 30 km (19 miles) from Modena, not far from the place where the magnitude 6 earthquake had struck on 20th May.

Officials said 350 people were injured. Buildings that had been previously damaged during the quake last week, were damaged further or destroyed.

Italian Red Cross has immediately increased its presence in the affected area, by deploying more ambulance cars and volunteers to the field. Red Cross staff and volunteers are involved in logistics, and emergency health activities through provision of medical service and psychosocial support.

In close cooperation with the Civil Protection, the Red Cross is involved in managing the reception centres where the evacuated people are accommodated. Also the Red Cross is supporting the damage assessment of the buildings and the needs assessment of the affected population.

MIRANDOLA, Italy (Reuters) - Italy raised tax on petrol to help pay for the damage from an earthquake that struck northern Italy as shaken survivors woke up on Wednesday to a landscape of collapsed warehouses and ruined factories.

Overnight 14,000 people slept in tents, shelters or cars outside their wrecked homes and more than 60 aftershocks jolted the area around the city of Modena in the Emilia Romagna region.

Some who were not assigned a shelter by civil protection units had to travel as far as Verona, 100 km (60 miles) away to buy tents.

Most of the 17 known victims perished under the rubble while at work when a 5.8-magnitude tremor struck shortly after 0700 GMT on Tuesday, the second strong earthquake to strike the area in nine days.

The residents of one of Italy's most productive regions, dominated by the fertile valley of the River Po, are now torn between the fear of more tremors and the fear of losing their jobs in the recession-hit country.

"After the first quake many people went back to work because there is an economic crisis here and they wanted to save their jobs," said Mauro Baraldini, whose two sons survived when the factories where they worked collapsed in the quake.

"Now they will think twice before going back."

On Sunday, May 20, 2012, at 4.02 AM, local time, in the night, an earthquake of Mw 5.9
(INGV) has been generated along the Dorsale Ferrarese near Finale Emilia; preliminary hypocentral
depth has been evaluated at ca. 6 km (source INGV). A Mw 5.1 aftershock followed few hours
later; a strong Mw 5.8 event occurred today, May 29. The whole sequence until now shows that
several segments of the E-trending Dorsale Ferrarese has been activated, for a total length of about
40 km. The death toll is at least 22 (7 on May 20, at least 15 today); damage is locally quite severe,
in particular in the historical downtown areas.

The environmental effects observed until now reveal a complex pattern of ground fractures
(Fig. 4), mostly associated with ejected sand (Fig. 5). Blue to gray fine sands from the fluvial
network crossing the epicentral area (Fig. 1) have been extensively liquefied to form fields of sand
volcanoes; reports of water fountains up to 1.5 m high are common in the area. The finest particles
of the vented material might have been already washed away by the rain and irrigation activities
subsequent to the mainshock. At several sites the ground water table has been reportedly uplifted by

Rebuilding Stalled Four Months After Quake

Closed town centres, tent cities and businesses facing difficulties

MIRANDOLA ? There?s something odd about walking through the town centre streets of Mirandola. Something sinister. Perhaps it?s the debris or the cracks in the walls. Or perhaps it?s the ubiquitous barriers and scaffolding that remind you collapses are a constant danger. But as you gaze on what remains of the cathedral, the mystery clears. The odd thing is the silence. It?s unreal. Your footsteps echo as if you were in an empty room. Seen from the gutted church of San Francesco, or from one of the many entrances propped up with wooden beams, the heart of Mirandola is one huge empty room.

It?s one of the most serious post-earthquake problems. Rebuilding the town centres scarred by the tremors of 20 and 29 May is a chapter in a book that has yet to be written but there is no sign of the pace quickening. ?If everything goes really, really well, it might be four or five years before we can use the past tense?, reckons Giovanni Messori, director of the Modena Confindustria employers? association. He?s one of the optimists.
