The magnitude 6 earthquake that hit northern Italy at the weekend, killing seven people and toppling historic churches, castles and clock towers, has also taken a huge toll on the country's culinary culture.
Parmesan cheese producers near the quake's epicentre in flat farmland north of Bologna said 300,000 massive wheels of the cheese that were ageing on tall shelves in warehouses crashed to the ground.

"All the shelving toppled over like huge dominoes and only 20 to 30% of my wheels survived unscathed," said Ivano Chezzi, the manager of one facility where 90,000 wheels were aging.

After ageing for 12 to 24 months, three million 40kg parmesan wheels worth almost ?2bn (?1.6bn) are sold each year from the region. Two-thirds of the output stays in Italy, and the rest ? about 40,000 tonnes ? is exported.

"The wheels that fell represent 10% of annual production," said a spokesman for the Parmigiano-Reggiano Cheese Consortium. Half of them might now be lost, he added, costing the business ?80m, including the cost of repairing storage warehouses.

The strong quake rocked an area with a long history of earthquakes, yet one that has kept relatively quiet for hundreds of years.

"There has not been a whole lot of action in that area," Caruso said. "The fact that they do have records of earthquakes going back a couple thousand years shows this area hasn't been seismically active for a long time," he said.

Several aftershocks have rocked the affected region, and it's not clear if this recent earthquake is a harbinger of things to come.

"We don't know if this is going to trigger more activity in this area or not," Caruso said. "We would expect to see aftershocks in the area for a while." There have already been at least 100 aftershocks.

This is the second intraplate earthquake in recent weeks to have what is described as an unexpected mechanism. The first was the 8.6 off the coast of Banda Aceh in early April, (followed by the 8.2):

Quake's odd location and size make it "something new," expert says.
The combination of these two factors?a high magnitude for an intraplate quake and its strike-slip nature?makes Wednesday's earthquake "rather intriguing," Okal added.

"This is in a sense something new," he said. "It's something we've never seen at this level of size in this particular area."

The aftershocks struck around midnight yesterday, with the first one measuring 4.3 and the second 3.2. Local media said a total of 18 aftershocks had hit the area during the night.

"The fear has returned," said Fernando Ferioli, mayor of the Finale Emilia town that was worst hit by Sunday's quake that killed six people and left thousands homeless.

"We're trying to convince people to return to their homes if these haven't been damaged, but if the aftershocks continue, this will be impossible," he said, adding that crews have been working to secure damaged buildings since dawn.

The makeshift dwellings set up in the aftermath of Sunday's quake are completely filled and entire families camped the night in their cars following the aftershocks, he said.

Earthquakes are always big news - or are they?​

Shortly after 4.00am on Sunday 20th May, an earthquake of magnitude 6.0 struck the Emilia-Romagna region of the Po valley in Northern Italy, about 22 miles north-northwest of Bologna.

Jolts and aftershocks were felt over a large area and although the death toll was reported to have been in single figures, more than 4,000 people were forced to seek temporary shelter or sleep in cars as more than 100 aftershocks, two of which had magnitudes of 5.1, rattled the region.

Experts consider that this has been the most damaging earthquake to Italy's cultural heritage since the two earthquakes that damaged the basilica of St Francis of Assissi in 1997. The Italian culture minister, Lorenzo Ornaghi is reported as saying that the cost of restoration will run to tens of thousands of Euros.

In just one small town, Finale Emilia, the cathedral, the town hall, three churches and a castle were all seriously damaged and a clock tower built in 1213 completely collapsed.

One of the problems in Italy is that although the risk of earthquake is forever present, precautions are negligible. In the 20<SUP>th</SUP> May earthquake, although two people reportedly died of shock, the other deaths were entirely due to the collapse of buildings. An old lady of 106 died in her own bed when she was hit by a falling beam, but four night-shift workers died in three different factories that collapsed.

One of the worrying factors was that these factories were among a significant number of collapsed buildings that were constructed within the last ten years. Italy has a number of laws that govern the construction of buildings in areas where there is a high-risk level of earthquakes, but application of the law has dragged its feet, chiefly because of the high costs of applying it.

Since the last major earthquake occurred as long ago as 1570 in nearby Ferrara, the area was never considered to have been particularly dangerous. However, it was reclassified in 2004 after fractures were discovered in the Apennines. As Gian Vito Graziano, head of the Italian Council of Geologists pointed out, last Sunday's events showed this new classification to be quite correct. The problem was that very little notice was taken of the warning.

More aftershocks hit Italy, thousands still homeless

(Reuters) - A force 4.0 tremor hit northern Italy on Sunday, one of the strongest of a series of aftershocks that have hit the area since it was struck by a magnitude 6.0 earthquake a week ago which killed seven people and made thousands homeless.

The Civil Protection Authority said the quake hit an area near Modena at around 1820 GMT and checks for damage were being carried out.

Thousands of people are still accommodated in tents or other makeshift housing a week after the original earthquake...

"People are very scared. It's been shaking nonstop for the past week," said journalist Andrea Vogt, who was near the epicenter.

"We don't know how many are still trapped," she told CNN. "Telephone lines are overloaded. It's difficult to get through to emergency personnel..."

CAVEZZO, Italy (Reuters) ? An earthquake killed at least 15 people in northern Italy on Tuesday, damaging buildings and spreading panic among thousands of residents still living in tents after a tremor in the same region destroyed their homes just over a week ago.

Officials said several people were trapped under the rubble of houses and warehouses in the Emilia-Romagna region, where several building sites and workshops had just reopened after the previous quake on May 20.

Civil protection officials said 15 people were confirmed dead. Seven people were killed in the May 20 quake that, like Tuesday?s, had its epicentre not far from the city of Modena.

Italian television showed buildings shaking and collapsing, ambulances racing across towns and rescue workers battling to remove rubble.
