Mapping indicates that the quake was located closest to the towns of San Felice sul Panaro, Finale Emilia, Composanto and Dodici Morelli.

Rome (CNN) -- A strong earthquake struck early Sunday in northern Italy, leaving at least five people dead, authorities said.

Two people were killed in a ceramic factory in Sant'Agostino di Ferrara, and one person died when a work shed collapsed in Ponte Rodoni di Bondeno, according to Elisabetta Maffani, spokeswoman for Italy's civil protection agency.

In addition, a woman in Bologna died of a heart attack during an evacuation, Maffani said.

It was not immediately clear how the fifth person died.

At least 50 people were injured. Workers were searching through rubble for survivors in Sant'Agostino.

The 6.0-magnitude quake occurred just after 4 a.m. (10 p.m. ET Saturday), 4 kilometers (2.4 miles) outside Camposanto, northwest of Bologna, the U.S. Geological Survey said....

Deadly earthquake rocks northern Italy

At least seven people have been killed and up to 50 others injured in a 6.0-magnitude earthquake near the northern Italian city of Bologna, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.

The strong quake struck at 4:04am local time (02:04 GMT) on Sunday in the country's industrial heartland while most people were sleeping, prompting thousands to run into the streets in panic.

Hospitals were evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Al Jazeera's Sabina Castelfranco, reporting from the worst affected town of Finale Emilia, said: "Scared people are out on the street and have refused to go back to their homes."

"There are apparently 13,000 people that have been displaced, and it is unclear whether there is going to be more victims found," she said.

"Authorities in the area have schools closed down until the situation stabilises," said Castelfranco.

A strong earthquake shook northern Italy early on Sunday, killing at least four people, toppling buildings and sending residents running into the streets, emergency services and news reports said. The magnitude-6.0 temblor struck at 4:04 a.m. (2:04 GMT) on Sunday between Modena and Mantova, about 35 kilometers (22 miles) north-northwest of Bologna at a relatively shallow depth of 5 kilometers (3.2 miles), the US Geological Survey said. It was one of the strongest quakes to shake the region.

ROME ? Firefighters, surveyors, engineers and volunteers struggled through nearly continuous aftershocks on Monday to catalog damage and deter looters one day after an earthquake killed seven people and left more than 6,000 homeless in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy.

More than 120 aftershocks rocked the area in the hours following the magnitude-6.0 earthquake, which toppled factories, apartment buildings, and medieval and Renaissance-era monuments early Sunday. The epicenter was a small town between the art-rich cities of Modena and Ferrara. The area had not been considered at high risk for earthquakes, leading officials to call for revisions to the country?s risk map.

The president of Emilia-Romagna, Vasco Errani, said in a television interview that it was too soon to determine the economic costs of the earthquake. ?They will be very significant, between our cultural heritage and businesses and housing, but we prefer to wait until we have more complete data,? he said.

An early estimate of $250 million worth of damage ? made by Coldiretti, an agricultural trade association ? included 400,000 wheels of Parmesan that were destroyed when the shelves on which they were aging collapsed. The cheese is a principal export of Emilia-Romagna.

A strong and unusually shallow earthquake struck northern Italy over the weekend, fracturing pavement, sending torrents of brick and rubble raining down from buildings, and killing seven people. The powerful shaking was a first for the region in centuries ? and fairly surprising to seismologists.

Data indicate the magnitude-6.0 quake, which struck just after 4 a.m. local time on Sunday (May 20), just north of Bologna, was a thrust quake ? the type of earthquake caused when two tectonic plates smash together ? yet it occurred at a depth of just 3 miles (5 kilometers).

"It is kind of surprising that it's that shallow, because it's pretty far from the plate boundary," said Paul Caruso, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey. "Normally we expect things to get deeper as they move northward," he told OurAmazingPlanet.

The strong quake rocked an area with a long history of earthquakes, yet one that has kept relatively quiet for hundreds of years.

"There has not been a whole lot of action in that area," Caruso said. "The fact that they do have records of earthquakes going back a couple thousand years shows this area hasn't been seismically active for a long time," he said.

Several aftershocks have rocked the affected region, and it's not clear if this recent earthquake is a harbinger of things to come.

"We don't know if this is going to trigger more activity in this area or not," Caruso said. "We would expect to see aftershocks in the area for a while." There have already been at least 100 aftershocks.

UNESCO monitors damage to heritage in northern Italy following powerful earthquake

The Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, today extended her condolences to the inhabitants of northern Italy for the loss of human life and suffering caused by the earthquake that shook the region on May 20.

The Director-General also said that UNESCO is sending a mission to assess damage to World Heritage sites and other cultural heritage in northern Italy.

?While initial reports from the Italian authorities indicate that the World Heritage sites of Ferrara, as well as Mantua and Sabbioneta, have not sustained severe damage, UNESCO will continue to monitor the situation. UNESCO stands ready to work with the Italian authorities to ensure that the outstanding universal value of these sites is preserved,? she stated.

Ferrara, City of the Renaissance, and its Po Delta was inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1995 as an outstanding example of a planned Renaissance city, which has retained its urban fabric virtually intact. The Po Delta presents an outstanding planned cultural landscape and retains its original form to a remarkable extent.

There has also been concern for the World Heritage property of Mantua and Sabbioneta, inscribed in 2008. Both cities offer exceptional testimonies of the architectural and artistic achievements of the Italian Renaissance and played an important role in the dissemination of that culture.

Early media reports of damage to the region's World Heritage sites at this stage appear to have been overstated. Nevertheless, there is concern for the preservation of many other important buildings, including churches and palaces, which bear testimony to the rich cultural and artistic heritage of Italy. These sites may not feature on the World Heritage List, but their value to communities, art lovers and scholars cannot be underestimated.
