Earthquake hits Russian Far East
22 April 2006

MOSCOW: A major earthquake struck the Kamchatka peninsula in Russia's Far East, damaging some buildings and slightly injuring a few people in the remote region, the Emergencies Ministry said.

The 7.7 magnitude tremor occurred at 12.25am local time (11.25am NZT) roughly 12.6km underground, the US Geological Survey said on its Web site.

The initial quake was followed by 10 aftershocks with magnitudes ranging between 4.5 and 6.1, according to the survey.

"Buildings and a runway have been damaged but there are no reports of casualties," said a regional emergencies ministry spokesman.

The epicentre was on Kamchatka's eastern coast, 70km east of the settlement Tilichiki, he added. Around 12,000 people live in the area affected by the quake.

"Some people had slight injuries but have been treated on the spot. Two planes with rescue workers have been dispatched to the area and people have been moved to higher ground where a temporary camp is planned," he added.

Sparsely populated Kamchatka, which is 6000km from Moscow, is becoming popular with adventurous tourists, who are attracted by its volcanoes, wildlife and opportunities for extreme sports such as heli-skiing.

A spokeswoman for the US Geological Survey said it was largest seismic event in the area since 1900.

Putin calls for all measures to deal with earthquake aftermath

MOSCOW. April 21 (Interfax) - President Vladimir Putin has given instructions to the Emergency Situations Ministry to take all necessary measures to eliminate the effects of the earthquake in Koryakia, in Russia's Far East.

Speaking before a session of the State Council in Moscow on Friday, Putin said rescue workers have left for the stricken area and inspected part of it.

Addressing governor of Kamchatka region Mikhail Mashkovtsev, he asked the local authorities to take part in evaluating the earthquake's aftermath.

Thirty-one people were hurt in Kamchatka earthquake; 7 of them were hospitalized

21.04.2006, 16.13

MOSCOW, April 21 (Itar-Tass) -- Thirty-one people were hurt in a major earthquake on Kamchatka, a source at the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry press service told Itar-Tass.

“Seven of them were hospitalized,” he said.

The quake affected the villages of Tilichki and Korf with the total population of 3,500.

An Il-76 of the ministry is readying for a flight to Kamchatka from the Ramenskoye airfield in the Moscow region. The plane will deliver diesel power plants, warm clothing and tents, the source said.

A ministerial task force led by Col. Gen. Gennady Korotkin is also going to Kamchatka.

I hope the BF lab at Petropavlovsk-kamchatskiy is okay. It's on the southern tip of Kamchatka.

Re: Earthquake hits Russia's Far East region

Celtic Cross,

That is a pretty impressive aftershock sequence throughout the Bering Sea region. Were there any indications of a foreshock?

Yep

Since 2003, there have been several earthquakes in the close area in excess of 5.0.

Hopefully the folks in the area prepared in advance of the hazard.

Re: Earthquake hits Russia's Far East region

That area, including the end of the Aleutians, gets lots of large earthquakes. Look at chart on bottom of this page to see the number of earthquakes over 7.0 since 1900 - it's a lot. The areas nearby - the end of the Aleutian Islands - have a similar history (especially Rat Islands and Andreanof Strait).

Re: Earthquake hits Russia's Far East region

AD,

Thanks for the link. The Aleutians are on the right half of the image.

It is pretty funny that many people in the United States think that Russia is so far away from the American shores.

The aftershock and foreshock sequence was felt and observed throughout the area, maybe even as far south as Sumatra.

They're 2 miles apart at the Diomede Islands. During the "cold war" relatives from both Islands (1 is Russian, 1 is US) would ignore Russian rules and go out onto the ice to meet midway and have "tea" with their family. See map here.

We're closer to Russia than mainland US! They are "neighbors."

Re: Earthquake hits Russia's Far East region

This site for a Kamchatka tour shows "beautiful" Petropavlovsk and a map (at bottom) of Kamchatka's volcanos (Testimony to it's geologic activity). If you go to the other pages on the site, you'll be seeing the Kuril Islands - the path migratory birds follow from Japan to Kamchatka to Alaska.

BTW - spring bear hunts are good too (unless the bears start eating dead birds).

Re: Earthquake hits Russia's Far East region

AD,

You said, "BTW - spring bear hunts are good too (unless the bears start eating dead birds)."

As a future hunter gatherer, I say....

Shoot the bears in the fall before they kill the humans.... just kidding.

> From Grizzly Man.. Discovery Channel

"Timothy Treadwell, tireless and passionate advocate for grizzly bears, was killed in October 2003 by the beast he so fervently adored and tried to protect. His remains, along with those of his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were discovered near their campsite in Alaska's Katmai National Park and Preserve. They had been mauled and devoured by a grizzly, the first known victims of a bear attack in the park. The bear suspected of the killings was later shot by park officials."

AD, we are on the same page, I think.

Re: Earthquake hits Russia's Far East region

We've been speculating which of our wild creatures could be drastically reduced by H5N1. There's a long list of scavengers and carnivores: ravens, eagles, magpies, bears, coyotes, foxes, bears, shrews, wolves, etc.

But it would leave more moose meat for people.

Eating bear meat never appealed to me because you need to worry about triconosis and it's supposed to taste bad - except just after berry season.

Timothy Treadwell didn't use good judgement. He miseducated people about the dangers of close proximity to bears - now he "teaches" by example. I used to get into heated discussions with his "clients" - not any more.

I'm not afraid of bears, but I don't give them any reasons to create a problem for me. It occured to me that should H5N1 cause neutropic symptoms in bears, THAT might be dangerous. What would be the equivalent of a bear going "arrgghhh plop"?
