DuPont to recall, stop selling herbicide

(Reuters) - DuPont said it plans to stop selling and recall its widely used Imprelis herbicide after customers and several lawsuits complained that the treatment has killed thousands of trees.

In a statement on Thursday, DuPont said it is in talks with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on "the most effective way to implement our recommendation of a voluntary suspension of sale of DuPont Imprelis herbicide, and a product return and refund program.".......

Experts have told the Free Press, which first reported claims about Imprelis earlier this month, that the damage could reach into millions of dollars. They said the damage is the worst to trees in Michigan since the emerald ash borer devastated ash trees starting in 2002.

Reuters says that DuPont DuPont's website said Imprelis was "the most scientifically advanced turf herbicide in over 40 years," targeting broadleaf weeds.

The active ingredient in Imprelis is "aminocyclopyrachlor" and just got conditional approval from the EPA last October.

"EPA is concerned about the sweeping nature of DuPont’s assertion of confidentiality and is evaluating whether these studies warrant such a claim under the law,” EPA says. “EPA strongly encourages DuPont to reconsider its [confidentiality] claims for these studies, especially for the phytotoxicity studies related to effects on trees.”....

In a second letter, also on Aug. 3, the agency [EPA] informed DuPont it also believes Imprelis' labeling is inadequate in advising of the product's potential risk to large plants such as trees.
