Central Veterinary Institute sequenced full genome of the recent Dutch H5N8 HPAI outbreak strain

CVI researchers have sequenced the complete genomes of the highly pathogenic H5N8 virus, that caused the avian influenza outbreak at a poultry farm in Hekendorp in November 2014.


This is the first full genome sequence of an European H5N8 HPAI outbreak virus as similarly detected in Germany and the UK. This full genome sequence of all 8 genomic segments will enable scientists to compare this virus with outbreak H5N8 viruses from Germany, the United Kingdom, Korea, Japan and China. The rapid deposition of the genome sequence in the GISAID database will contribute to assess transmission routes of the H5N8 HPAI (GISAID accession number EPI_ISL_167905). Analysis demonstrated that the Dutch virus has high similarity to two Korean and one Japanese strain indicating that the Dutch virus strain might have come from Asia.
