U.N. reports 120 unexplained deaths in northeast Congo

GENEVA (Reuters) - Authorities in northeastern Congo have reported the unexplained deaths of more than 120 internally displaced people, 93 of them under 15 years old, in an area bordering Uganda in March and April, a U.N. humanitarian report said on Friday.

The deceased often showed symptoms of anemia and fever. They were displaced at Kandoyi in Ituri province, a town that has taken in more than 4,000 people uprooted northwards by fighting since mid-February, the report said.

Overview of the situation Authorities in the Territory of Aru reported an unusually high rate of death among IDPs in Kandoyi, more than 350 km north of Bunia, in Ituri Province. More than 120 deaths were reported between March and April, including 93 children under 15 years of age. Fever and anemia are the most common symptoms among those who die. The causes of these community deaths are not yet known. According to local authorities, most die at home for lack of care. The Local Inter Organizations Committee (CLIO) recommended that humanitarian actors in the health sector make an assessment of the situation in order to consider appropriate response actions. To date, there has been no official epidemiological investigation by the Biringi Health Zone. Nearly 70,000 pupils and schoolchildren saw their schooling disrupt following the violence that occurred since December 2017 in Djugu. At present, about 12,000 children in Grade 6 are about to miss the TENAFEP exam (National Primary School Leaving Test). The Education Cluster pleads with the Ministry of Education for the reorganization of the school calendar for these children to allow them to pass the TENAFEP.
