At least 70 cows have died in the Mwenga region of South Kivu. According to initial results from the veterinary laboratory, foot-and-mouth disease is the cause of these deaths.

They cannot even eat or do anything else," announced Fundi Walumona, veterinarian of the fisheries and livestock service of the Luindi chiefdom.

"It's a dangerous disease for animals and contagious for other animals. It's not allowed to consume its meat," adds the veterinarian.
For three days, specialist services have been struggling with a fuel shortage to organize the safe burial of these cattle abandoned in several parts of the country.
"These cows have been dead for three days, we're going to bury them here because we don't even have enough fuel to bury them," explains Fundi Walumona.
For his part, the president of the butchers of the Mwenga territory called on residents to be vigilant.
"We have no hope that they will live. But we are also burying these cows that are here to prevent the spread ," said Jacques Milenge, vice-president of the butchers of the Mwenga territory.
Civil society is calling for increased measures to prevent the spread of this disease in the Mwenga region.
