Uganda alert after Ebola reports in DRC
Publish Date: Jul 21, 2014

Ugandan health experts are monitoring neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo where suspected cases of Ebola have been reported.

Dr. Asuman Lukwago, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Health said: ?The suspected cases were in Aruu and other parts of northeastern Congo. We learnt Kinshasa was testing the samples.?

Although he could not provide how many suspected cases have been reported in DR Congo, Dr. Lukwago said Uganda has been on alert since the outbreak in West Africa.

?If Ebola is confirmed in Congo, we can send our team to work with the Congolese so that the disease is controlled from there,? added Lukwago.

Faced with the progression of the Ebola disease in West Africa, the Minister of Health, Dr. Felix Kabange Numbi, reassured the Congolese population that there was not a single case of Ebola virus disease in the Democratic Republic of Congo. But in its recent report, WHO reveals that a suspected case of viral haemorrhagic fever has been detected on a 4 year old girl in the health zone of Ganga -Dingila, Ituri district in Orientale Province, during the week of July 28, 2014.

To stop the spread of this disease, he announced preventive measures, including the establishment of a medical screening of travelers coming from West Africa, especially for airlines that fly to major capitals countries in this part of Africa; the coming installation of a thermal scanner and laser thermometers in major international airports and the DRC (Kinshasa N'djili, Luano in Lubumbashi, Kisangani Bangbok, etc.); the identification of six referral facility in the capital capable of receiving a possible suspect disease Ebola cases. And among many other preventive measures, he also cited the capacity of the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB) with support from WHO for analyzing suspect samples and checking the physical inventories of protection kits available in all provinces and health zones of the DRC.

About the suspected case detected in Orientale province, the first sample, collected by MSF-CH and analyzed in the laboratory to Entebbe in Uganda, was negative. A second sample was sent to INRB Kinshasa for further analysis. The results are still awaited. The two offices of WHO / DRC and Uganda coordinate and manage this situation closely with MSF.
