Haut-Katanga: Provincial government warns of new canine rabies epidemic in Lubumbashi
Wednesday, February 12, 2025 - 3:10 p.m.
Several cases of stray dog bites have been reported in the city of Lubumbashi, the capital of Haut-Katanga province. Without mentioning the number of victims, the provincial Minister of Health, Joseph Sambi Bulanda, has already mentioned the existence of a canine rabies epidemic concentrated more in the annex commune that forms the belt of the copper city.
"A canine rabies epidemic is raging in the city of Lubumbashi and particularly in the annexed commune. In order to stop the spread of this epidemic caused by the bites of stray dogs, it is recommended to vaccinate all domestic animals, that is to say dogs, cats and monkeys. This vaccination is carried out in all the different communal offices," he said in his update this Wednesday.
Mr. Sambi Bulanda specifies that any case of bite must be referred without delay and will be handled free of charge by the Lubumbashi Vaccination Office.
In recent days, in the annexed commune, several stray dogs have been visible. It is these unvaccinated dogs that are at the root of the resurgence of this canine rabies epidemic in the city of Lubumbashi.
