Mwenga: The Kitutu health zone reports cases of poliovirus

Sat 15/08/2026 - 20:08

The provincial health division of South Kivu province has confirmed the presence of two cases of poliovirus in recent days in the Kitutu health zone, Mwenga territory in South Kivu.

According to Dr. Claude Bahizire, the communications officer at the DPS, South Kivu, two cases of variant poliovirus have been detected in Kitutu.

"I am informing you that there are two cases of variant poliovirus that have just been detected in the Kitutu health zone. This is becoming a very serious problem; we are now forced to revaccinate, perhaps even every month, against polio. We may have vaccination campaigns from September until December to try to break this contamination," said Dr. Claude Bahizire, communications officer at the South Kivu Health Directorate.

During the launch of the integrated Measles, Rubella and Polio campaign in South Kivu, the WHO representative revisited this case while calling for vigilance from residents.

"In South Kivu, recent results have confirmed two cases of cVDPV2 in the Kitutu health zone with an orphan profile indicating the possibility of silent circulation of the poliovirus," the WHO representative stated at the ceremony.

According to the WHO epidemiological report, this case was notified in week 31.

The last 5 cases of poliovirus have been recorded in the province of South Kivu since 2023.

This new case of poliovirus is reported in South Kivu during a vaccination campaign.
