“ A case of polio has been detected in the Kafubu health zone. This requires an urgent vaccination response in this health zone ,” announced Delphin Kabalila, communications officer at the Haut-Katanga provincial public health division.

" In this response, health zones that have geographical boundaries with the Kafubu health zone are also concerned, notably Sakania, Kisanga, Kasenga, Lubumbashi, Kenya, Lukafu, Kampemba and Ruashi for children aged zero to five years ," said Mr. Kabalila who was speaking during a briefing on the expanded vaccination program.

Last year, another vaccination response of this kind was organized in the Kapolowe health zone and in all the surrounding health zones, it is recalled.

Tanganyika province has recorded 247 cases of children paralyzed by polio since 2017. This alarming statistic was revealed this Thursday, April 10, by the provincial Minister of Health, Dr. Benoit Malumbi, during the launch of the polio vaccination campaign.

"Since 2017, to date, 247 children have been spread across the six territories of Tanganyika province. These children will never walk again because of polio, a vaccine-preventable disease," said Dr. Malumbi, calling for increased mobilization to protect children.

The minister also reported that the province recorded four new cases of polio in 2024, during the first half of the year, in the health zones of Kalemie, Nyemba, Nkansimba and Nyunzu.

A threat to nearly a million children

Dr. Benoit Malumbi emphasized that this vaccination campaign is a crucial step in the fight against this debilitating disease, which continues to endanger the health and future of 873,717 children in the province.

He also discussed the main factors that hamper the effectiveness of this fight: the low uptake of vaccination services by some parents, as well as the persistence of resistance within certain religious groups.

Cases of acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) have been reported in recent days in Moba territory, Tanganyika province. The information was confirmed on Thursday, August 7, by the chief medical officer of the Moba health zone, Barwine Moma, during an interview with Radio Okapi.

Biological samples were taken from the patients and sent to Kinshasa for analysis, said Dr. Barwine Moma. These tests will help determine whether these cases are linked to polio, a serious viral disease that can cause irreversible paralysis.

" Any nerve damage can lead to flaccid paralysis. There are also cases of polio that cause this type of paralysis. When a child who used to walk no longer walks, we must consider this a suspicious case ," explained Dr. Moma.

Cases confused with malnutrition

Some time ago, two children were notified at Moba Port. However, after investigation, it turned out that their paralysis was due to severe malnutrition and delayed psychomotor development, and not polio .
