Signing of an emergency response project to the MPOX epidemic in the DRC

August 4, 2025

Kinshasa, August 4, 2025 (CPA). – An emergency response project to the Mpox (monkeypox) epidemic in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) was signed Monday during a ceremony presided over at the government building in Kinshasa by the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare.

"  It is with a high sense of duty that I speak during this ceremony which is dedicated to the signing of the emergency response project to the Mpox epidemic in the DRC, implemented thanks to the enlightened support of the Government of Japan and the accompaniment of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) ," declared Dr. Roger Samuel Kamba, Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare.

“ This strong commitment marks a new step in our coordinated response to the Mpox epidemic ,” said Mr. Samuel Roger Kamba, Minister of Public Health.

" It aims, in particular, to ensure the treatment of 2,000 confirmed cases, to vaccinate up to 250,000 contact persons, to treat more than 3,700 children suffering from acute malnutrition, to strengthen health infrastructure in 12 health zones, and to train more than 3,500 community actors on prevention and the fight against stigmatization, " he indicated.

Dr. Kamba argued that this project is also part of a sustainable health approach, focused on community resilience, building human capital capacity, and improving supply chains and decision-making in high-risk areas.

"  This project is distinguished by its integrated and multidimensional ambition, serving sustainable and resilient health  ," he added. The minister also praised the faithful partnership between the DRC and Japan, recalling that this friendly country has supported the Congolese people for decades, both in emergency situations and in structural efforts, notably through the training of human resources and logistical support for the health system. The signed project was proposed by the Government of Japan, implemented with the support of UNICEF in coordination with the Congolese government. ACP/CL

DRC: USA equips public health emergency operations center with digital equipment to fight MPOX

Sunday, August 17, 2025 - 06:53

The United States government, through the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has officially handed over digital equipment to the Public Health Emergency Operations Center (Cousp) located at the Kinshasa General Reference Hospital, Ex Mama Yemo. This batch of equipment supports the digital transformation of the entire Cousp service but also strengthens surveillance and response to epidemics, particularly Mpox.

A total of 1,163 tablets, 1,163 power banks, 1,163 screen protectors and accessories, and 2 large screens for data visualization were donated to the Public Health Emergency Operations Center.

"The United States is very proud to be a partner with these institutions. We see that the DRC is a country afflicted with many epidemics, many infectious diseases, so a decent emergency center is obviously essential to fight all these epidemics, and we are proud to be a partner for training and also for equipment," said Lucy Tamlyn, U.S. Ambassador to the DRC.

For his part, the Director General of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) welcomed this action by the American government.

"We have just received screens and tablets, these are giant screens for data visualization, so it will really further improve our information system. Because in real time we can have this data, analyze it in the form of a dashboard on these screens and allow for rapid and real-time decision-making. This is truly a significant improvement that we have just received from the American government through the CDC, and these tablets will also allow data to be collected in real time and visualized even in peripheral communities. This is truly a considerable step forward in improving epidemic management," said Dieudonné Mwamba, DG/Insp.

This donation, valued at US$550,000, is part of CDC's broader commitment to strengthening epidemiological and surveillance capacity at the national and provincial levels. These efforts directly support the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) and the deployment of the electronic Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response System (eIDSR), a transformative initiative aimed at improving data management, analysis, and reporting across the country.

Excerpt from the briefing:

Interestingly, there have been some detections of Mpox in dogs, rats, bats and squirrels in the Equateur and Tshopo provinces which remind us that though the human to human transmission is one of the key drivers because of the clade 1b and the clade 2b within the continent, the One Health approach still remains because finding Mpox in the animal, of some of those domestic animals highlights the challenge of a transmission between the animal and the human.

Equateur: Mpox detected in a dog and a squirrel, the governor strengthens animal surveillance

Posted on August 23, 2025 at 6:33 pm

The Governor of Equateur Province, Dieudonné Bobo Boloko Bolumbu, announced on August 23, 2025, that two animals, a female dog from the Basankusu health zone (Bokakata village) and a squirrel from the Bolenge health zone (Ilema village), tested positive for Monkeypox (Mpox) by the laboratory of the National Institute for Biomedical Research (INRB).

Faced with this situation, the governor instructed animal surveillance services to strengthen control of these species and other animals in order to limit the spread of the disease.

He also called on national authorities and partners to support the province in the fight against monkeypox. He recommended that the population not consume suspect animals and inform the veterinary service or environmental services if their animals become ill.

Clade IIb MPXV in the Democratic Republic of the Congo The Democratic Republic of the Congo has notified WHO of two cases of mpox due to clade IIb MPXV in the capital, Kinshasa. These cases represent the first confirmed detection of clade IIb MPXV in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The index case involved an adult male who had recently travelled from Côte d’Ivoire, where exposure to mpox most likely occurred. Phylogenetic analysis corroborates this, indicating that the viral strain is closely related to sequences from mpox cases in Côte d’Ivoire and Nigeria. This index case was followed by a secondary, locally acquired infection in one of his contacts. Epidemiological investigations identified a total of 25 contacts linked to these two cases. Post-exposure vaccination with the MVA-BN vaccine has been administered to 23 contacts and all contacts were placed under active follow-up for symptoms monitoring. No additional cases were reported.
