Maniema: 156 goats decimated by an epizootic in one territory in ten days

March 12, 2025

Kailo, March 12, 2025 (ACP).- An epizootic of still unknown origin decimated 156 goats in the space of ten days in villages in the Wasongola sector, in Kailo territory, in the province of Maniema, in the center-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the ACP learned on Wednesday from the local civil society.

" We are alerting the provincial public authorities about the appearance of an epizootic of still unknown origin which has been decimating livestock in the Wasongola Sector since the beginning of March 2025. One hundred and fifty-six (156) goats have been decimated by this disease; the villages most affected by this epizootic are: Libuyu, Kakungu, Tuzumbu, Kimanga and others. We are worried by this situation because the economy of these farmers is based on agriculture and livestock farming," said Munyangi Kyalimba, president of this citizen structure in the Kailo territory.

Approached on this subject by the ACP, Ir Norbert Amsni Kikunda, the Territorial Inspector of Agriculture and Food Safety in the territory of Kailo, confirmed this news before not only inviting the population of the villages affected by this epizootic to refrain from consuming the meat of animals decimated by the disease to avoid contamination but also to the provincial ministry in charge of Agriculture, Fisheries and Livestock and the provincial division of the said Sector to take useful measures to put an end to this epizootic.

Another epizootic had decimated goats in January 2025 in villages in the Ambwe sector in the same Kailo territory in the northern part of Maniema province, he added.
