Approximately one hundred cows belonging to the Société de grands élevages du Congo (Large Livestock Company of Congo), located in the Mbanza-Ngungu territory (Kongo-Central province), have been decimated for about three months by a tick-borne disease. The company's manager stated that analyses of samples taken from the infected animals were carried out by the veterinary laboratory in Kinshasa. These analyses confirmed the presence of the disease.
The farm states that it has already recorded approximately 150 deaths among its livestock. Three months ago, the first cows were decimated by this disease transmitted by ticks, small parasites that feed on the blood of animals and humans.
According to the farm manager, Honoré Mampasi, this situation was caused by livestock from neighboring countries that passed through the village towards the end of December 2025. Three months later, the following symptoms appeared, including:
the dejection
the presence of blood in the urine
the incoordination of the members
Loss of appetite before death ensues.
Meat from dead animals
Dr. Mampasi clarifies, however, that contrary to information circulating on social media, these diseases do not cause coughing, diarrhea, or bleeding. He assures that the affected animals are receiving treatment and that the situation is gradually returning to normal, leading to a decrease in mortality.
He calls on the population to remain calm, assuring them that the situation is already being handled by the competent veterinary services .
For his part, the provincial head of the fisheries and livestock division assures that strict measures have been taken to ensure that meat from dead animals is neither sold nor consumed by the population to avoid any health risks.
