About 400 cases of diarrhea were reported between January and February in children in the Komanda health zone, located 75 km from the city of Bunia (Ituri).
These figures were reported on Sunday, March 2, by the authorities of the Komanda General Reference Hospital.
They attributed this increase in cases, in particular, to the shortage of drinking water and the vulnerability of the population.
Radio Okapi reporters visited the hospital on Sunday. In the pediatric ward, they found more than a dozen children suffering from diarrhea and other respiratory illnesses.
Among these children was an infant of about 18 months, on a drip and nestled in the arms of his mother, who was visibly worried about her child's state of health: " The child's condition is not yet good, he has diarrhea and vomits all the time, his health worries me, he does not eat and does not suckle. He has just been given a drip, his health is not yet good ."
Next to her, Julienne Musama, another mother hospitalized for a few days with her child, who also suffered from diarrhea, but who is gradually recovering.
Julienne hopes that the government will restore security in the area, which will allow her to return to her fields and have enough resources to care for her family and obtain the products needed to purify water and protect herself from waterborne diseases.
However, she is pleased with the improvement in her child's health:
" The child had a fever and was vomiting all the time, I took care to take him to the hospital, and today the child is doing well. He was given an IV, but we were also given antibiotics to continue the treatment at home. We notice that there is an improvement ."
