Ituri: more than 90 cases of tuberculosis in the central prison of Bunia

The central prison of Bunia recorded 92 cases of tuberculosis in the space of three months and 200 detainees run the risk of contamination with this disease. These figures were published on Wednesday, May 25, by the medical director of the hospital center of this prison, Doctor Wathum Ucircan.

He specifies that the patient isolation cell is too cramped to contain more than 50 tuberculosis patients at the moment.

This constitutes, according to him, a danger for the health of the approximately two thousand prisoners of this prison.

“For this number of 92 sick prisoners, the isolation zone is only built for a capacity of 16 sick people. They are beyond 50 those who are in the first phase; hence the intensive phase. And then they are now inside the prison with the risk of developing a resistant strain which will be even more dangerous as a biological weapon,” he warned.

The medical director of the Bunia central prison hospital center also indicated that the general precarious situation in which the prisoners find themselves accentuates this health problem.

“Beyond the state of vulnerability due to their state of health, overpopulation and malnutrition are now aggravating the disease. We can say that we have now set the fire. So that's the situation that now scares us in the days to come, ”explains the medical director.

Doctor Wathum fears “that a person who comes to prison healthy will return home with tuberculosis at the risk of dying there”.
