Ituri: 36 small ruminants decimated by contagious pleuropneumonia in Kasenyi (Territorial Fisheries and Livestock Inspection)

December 25, 2023

Bunia, December 25, 2023 (ACP).- 36 small ruminants were decimated in the space of a week following the contagious pleuropneumonia disease in Kasenyi, in the province of Ituri (North-East of the Democratic Republic of Congo) , the ACP learned on Friday from an administrative source.

“In a herd of 89 small cattle, we recorded 36 cases of mortality in one week in Kasenyi, capital of the Bahema-South sector, following the contagious pleuropneumonia disease,” declared Mr. Charles Besisa, fisheries inspector. and breeding of the Irumu territory.

And to continue : “As soon as we were alerted, we directly carried out a field trip to check if it was which disease before taking measures, precautions and avoiding the spread of this disease among the large number of these animals .

To avoid the spread of this disease, Dr. Besisa called on those in Irumu territory in general, more particularly those in Kasenyi center, to avoid the disorderly movement of livestock in the bush and illegal slaughter. He recommended prior examination of the consumption of all meat by veterinary technicians before its sale in the various markets.

To this end, he asked meat consumers to respect the instructions of the technical services to prevent the large-scale rise of this disease in this region.

The fisheries and livestock inspector of the Irumu territory said that veterinarians treat livestock through symptomatic treatment following lack of vaccines. He pleaded with the Government of the Republic through the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock so that the province of Ituri is provided with vaccines for small livestock. ACP/KKP

Ituri: contagious pleuropneumonia, a disease that affects goats, alerted in the province

Writing

The provincial coordinator of the epidemiological surveillance service of the fishing and livestock division of Ituri warns of suspected cases of a goat disease called “contagious caprine pleuropneumonia”.

Jean-Paul Kasereka, in an interview given to our colleagues at Radio CANDIP ISP Bunia, indicates that he has detected this disease particularly on the coast of Lake Albert in the Kasenyi-Tchomia plain and in the town of Bunia.

» We were alerted by the inhabitants of Kasenyi about the deaths of goats, and after a decent survey in the field, we suspected contagious goat pleuropneumonia. This disease causes economic losses ,” said Doctor Jean-Paul Kasereka.

Wanting to know the origin of this infection, he presumes on the mass origin of these animals from the territory of Mahagi, as the place from which it came.

Mr. Kasereka asks the keepers of the goats, the butchers, each time to direct their animals towards public slaughter and stop their wanderings, because he concludes, "if the animals are wandering it will be difficult to control the disease" .
