Equateur: Three deaths from unknown disease recorded in Basankusu

Mbandaka, September 25, 2025 (ACP). – Three (3) deaths linked to an unknown disease were reported in a boat in Basankusu, Equateur province, in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the ACP learned on Thursday from the medical director of the general referral hospital of the said entity.
" We recorded three deaths and 15 sick people on a boat coming from Kinshasa to Baulu village, in Befale territory, via Basankusu ," said David Lotala, medical director of the Basankusu general referral hospital.
" This mysterious disease has dispersed several travelers who headed to our two health centers, located 45 and 60 km from the central office, to escape the alarming situation on board their boat ," he added.
According to the doctor, the boat was docked at the large Onatra port of Basankusu. The central office team began public health actions, including decontaminating the boat, followed by the dignified and safe burial of three bodies.
He also communicated on the risks, isolated all suspected cases and established a list of contacts.
For his part, Provincial Deputy Clovis Elongama, elected from this territory, has sensitized all authorities, including the provincial governor, the minister, and the head of the health division, to take the necessary measures. He stressed that the frequent shipwrecks in this region could be the cause of this as yet unidentified disease.
It is important to note that vomiting and watery diarrhea are symptoms of this disease, which remains unknown pending the results of tests sent to the laboratory in Kinshasa. A total of 150 passengers were found, including 15 isolated cases at Basankusu General Hospital. ACP/
