Equateur: Bikoro population alerted to the danger of consuming unidentified animals

August 23, 2025

Mbandaka, August 23, 2025 (ACP).- The population of Bikoro territory, Equateur province, in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been alerted to the danger of consuming unidentified animals, the ACP learned on Saturday from a local health source.

" We want to remind the population of the rigor that must prevail in the face of the risk of consuming unidentified animals. Several diseases are of animal origin and, through contact or consumption, we are exposed to epidemiological risks. Vigilance must always be at its highest ," declared Dr. Jean Robert Looka, interim chief medical officer of the Bikoro area.

He also recalled that "the Bikoro territory has faced, over the past five years, serious health crises, including the Ebola and Mpox epidemics, with deplorable consequences. The consumption of animals has been at the center of concerns within the framework of the preventive measures to be respected. Hence, we reiterate this warning, especially during this period of food crisis ."

It should be noted that currently, the fish shortage, in particular, and the food crisis in general, are affecting households in the Bikoro territory. Consequently, one of the consequences is the consumption of any meat, regardless of its health status, especially since animal surveillance is not ensured.

" Stay vigilant, because our health zone, with its forest and wildlife, is still plagued by all the health crises that are hitting the province of Equateur . " ACP/UKB
