DRCongo: covid-19: Congo is apparently doing quite well
July 7, 2020
By Marie-France Cros.

The DRCongo officially totaled Monday, July 6, 7,660 cases of coronavirus, which resulted in 183 deaths. For a country of 80 million people, where the pandemic first appeared on March 10, this is a good figure, even if we know that many cases go unreported because they are not tested and that many Congolese are dying from ailments unknown to them.

Fourteen of the country's 26 provinces are affected, with the vast majority of cases in Kinshasa (6,584 cases), followed by Kongo-Central (337 cases), Haut-Katanga (260 cases) and South Kivu (254 cases). We know there are actually more cases but, unlike other countries, there does not seem to be an explosion. The hospitals are not overwhelmed.

A very young population

Assumptions are going well to see where to attribute this relatively good result; one of the most repeated remarks is that concerning the very low age of the Congolese population. In the DRC, the median age is slightly below 19 years - compared to 41 years in Belgium, 43 years in Italy, 38 years in the United States or 37 years in China. In all the countries where the epidemic has taken its toll, 80% of deaths have occurred in people over the age of 65. However, in DRCongo, less than 4% of the population has reached this age.

The Congo is not the only country in Africa that seems to be doing relatively well. There are an estimated 11,500 deaths across the continent, including 6,700 in only two countries, South Africa and Egypt.

Much less than malaria or measles

The number of coronavirus cases in the DRC should also be seen in a more general context. Since the beginning of this year, there have been some 11 million cases of malaria, which have left 8,500 people dead; about 12,000 cases of cholera, which resulted in 189 deaths - about the same as coronavirus and typhoid, which affected 750,000 people. The 10th Ebola epidemic in the east of the country, which lasted from August 2018 to June 26, left 2,300 people dead for 3,500 cases.

Measles, which attracts little attention (even before the Covid-19 pandemic), has developed over the past one to two years - despite a vaccination campaign announced under the Kabila presidency - and has occurred in 26 provinces since the beginning of this year, a total of some 900 deaths, for about 64,000 cases; a new vaccination campaign is underway, which would slow the progression of the disease.

Note that diseases that were believed to be confined to the past resurface. Thus, the plague reappeared in 2019 in a single health area in Ituri (northeast of the DRC), that of Rethy; there are 28 cases, including 10 deaths.
