Walikale: Cholera outbreak in the Kibua health zone, six deaths already out of 56 recorded cases

Tuesday, April 21, 2026 - 06:51

A suspected cholera outbreak has been reported in the Walikale territory of North Kivu. Since the beginning of March, 56 cases, including 6 deaths, have been recorded in the Kibua health zone, according to local health authorities. Children over the age of five are among the most affected.

The health zones of Ntoto, Langira, and Kilungu are the most affected by this outbreak. According to the chief medical officer of the Kibua health zone, Dr. Yves Tsongo Bikunde, the situation is exacerbated by the massive displacement of populations.

Residents fleeing armed clashes in the neighboring territory of Masisi find themselves in precarious conditions, facilitating the spread of the disease.

On the ground, providing care for the sick remains difficult. The lack of medical supplies, the absence of drinking water, and the deficiency in sanitation infrastructure complicate the response.

"We have taken care of some cases, but with insufficient resources. We are appealing to our partners for urgent support," said the chief medical officer of the area.

Meanwhile, samples have been sent to the laboratory for confirmation. Red Cross teams are already working to disinfect households and raise public awareness.

Health authorities are calling for strict adherence to hygiene measures, including drinking clean water, washing hands regularly, cooking food thoroughly, and seeking prompt medical attention in case of diarrhea.

Cholera in DRC: North Kivu leads with new infections, 215 suspected cases and one death; resurgence reported at Mbanza-Ngungu prison

Monday, April 27, 2026 - 08:53

The health situation in the country, characterized in particular by the cholera epidemic, was addressed by the government of the Republic during the 87th meeting of the Council of Ministers. According to the information note from the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare, Samuel Roger Kamba, compared to the previous week, the trend in the 15th week is marked by a decrease in suspected cases, from 968 to 915, with 4 deaths recorded, representing a case fatality rate of 0.4%, compared to 1.5% the previous week.

According to the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare, Samuel Roger Kamba, as quoted in the minutes of the meeting held on Friday, April 24, 2026, this trend is observed in Kinshasa, Haut-Katanga, Tanganyika, and Haut-Lomami. North Kivu province was the most affected this week, with 215 new suspected cases and one death.

Regarding the city-province of Kinshasa, the minister's information note reveals a downward trend, with 33 new suspected cases and no deaths this week, compared to 36 cases and 2 deaths in week 14. Furthermore, 10 active cases are currently being treated in cholera treatment centers, compared to 16 the previous week.

Furthermore, addressing the cholera situation specifically at Mbanza-Ngungu prison, as of April 17, the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene, and Social Welfare, Samuel Roger Kamba, indicated that the cumulative number of cases remained at 160, including 13 deaths. According to the meeting report read by the government spokesperson, all four wings of the prison were affected.

However, the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare specified that after 16 days of calm without notification of new suspected cases, a resurgence of the epidemic has been observed since April 18, with 8 new cases, bringing the total to 168 cases.

As a reminder, alongside the Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Welfare, the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), and local teams, the WHO is increasing its support in the affected areas. According to the WHO, this approach puts communities at the heart of the action, as they are the primary actors in detection, prevention, and breaking the chains of transmission.

This multi-sectoral mobilization relies on the generosity of WHO partners and donors, in particular the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), whose contributions directly support field operations and consolidate the foundations for a sustainable elimination of cholera in Kinshasa.

Health authorities and the WHO continue to urge all communities, local leaders, media, schools, churches, mosques, associations and families to intensify awareness of essential actions: hand washing, water treatment, sanitation and immediate reporting of cases of acute diarrhea.

North Kivu: four deaths and seventeen suspected cases of cholera recorded in Mutongo-Walikale.

April 30, 2026

Beni, April 29, 2026 (ACP) - Four deaths and seventeen suspected cases of cholera have been recorded in Mutongo, in the Pinga health zone, Walikale territory, North Kivu, in the East of the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to a humanitarian alert received by ACP on Wednesday.

“A critical health situation is developing in Mutongo, in the Pinga health zone, Walikale territory.

The alarming provisional toll is four (4) deaths already reported and seventeen (17) suspected cases of cholera recorded, with aggravating factors,” reads the statement signed by Moïse Bushu of the Congolese humanitarian organization Soutien et Actions de Développement (
SAD-International).

The epidemic is believed to be linked to the massive influx of displaced people from Masisi territory, particularly from the localities of Nyabiondo, Lukweti, and Misheeshe.

These populations, fleeing the escalating fighting between the Wazalendo and the RDF/AFC-M23 coalition, are living in extremely precarious conditions due to a lack of access to drinking water, inadequate sanitation facilities, and severe overcrowding.

The disease has already spread to Mutongo, raising fears of rapid expansion throughout the Pinga area, already weakened by insecurity and population displacement.

The response is focused on basic needs, hence the necessity of an emergency meeting held on April 29 in Pinga, in addition to a supervisory mission deployed in the field.

Urgent needs include medicines, medical supplies, and logistical support.

Faced with this alarming situation, the interim chief medical officer of the Walikale health zone, Dr. Théophile Mukandirwa, has issued an urgent appeal to authorities and humanitarian partners for immediate and urgent medical support in the form of cholera kits, IV fluids, and antibiotics.

Access to clean water and sanitation,as well as rapid community awareness campaigns, are also urgently required.

Without swift intervention, the risk of a large-scale epidemic is high, warns officials, as if calling for urgent mobilization, essential to contain the spread and save lives in this already crisis-stricken region. ACP/CL

South Kivu: More than 6,400 cases of cholera and 80 deaths recorded between January and May 2026

Thursday, June 4, 2026 - 6:21 PM

At least 80 people died from cholera between January and May 2026 across the province of South Kivu.

In a report published on June 2, 2026 by the Provincial Health Division (DPS) through its cholera management system, health authorities indicate that the cumulative number of suspected cases is 6,494, with 80 deaths, representing a case fatality rate of 1.2%.

"The cumulative number of suspected cases is 6,494, with 80 deaths and a case fatality rate of 1.2%," the report states.

During the 22nd epidemiological week, the province recorded 193 new cases with no deaths, resulting in a zero case fatality rate.

The DPS also specifies that, among the 80 deaths recorded, 33 occurred in health facilities while 47 were recorded in the community.

Of the province's 34 health zones, 23 have already been affected by the epidemic, with at least one case reported. According to the Provincial Health Directorate (DPS), 65% of cases are concentrated in five health zones: Fizi, Ibanda, Ruzizi, Uvira, and Itombwe.

For comparison, South Kivu had recorded 13,027 cases of cholera and 99 deaths in 2025. In 2024, the cumulative number of cases was 3,668, with 29 deaths.

The Provincial Health Division also highlights several challenges in the response to the epidemic.

"There is a risk of disruption to the supply of resources needed to manage cases in the province. The community response remains insufficient in some areas to interrupt the chain of transmission," the report states.

In the first half of 2026, the province had already reported 4,607 cases for the first fourteen weeks of the year, with 67 deaths recorded in the 23 affected health zones.

The resurgence of cholera comes on top of other epidemics shaking the province of South Kivu, notably the Ebola virus disease.

Kwango: Cholera epidemic officially declared in the Popokabaka health zone

Thursday, June 25, 2026 - 6:04 PM

A cholera outbreak has been officially declared in the Popokabaka health zone, located in the territory of the same name in Kwango province. The disease has claimed 10 lives since May 24th. Of the 136 reported cases, 3 of the 11 samples taken have been confirmed positive by the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB).

The Kwango provincial government, which made the official announcement on Thursday, recommended several hygiene and prevention measures to combat the spread of the disease. These include regularly washing hands before and after meals and after using the toilet, consuming only clean or treated water, using and maintaining clean latrines and the surrounding environment, and thoroughly cooking food before consumption.

The provincial executive has mobilized the services responsible for maintaining public order to ensure that the food sold or produced is properly covered.

Popokabaka is one of the endemic areas in Kwango province. In June 2025, local authorities officially declared a measles outbreak, with the region listed among the affected areas. Besides measles, typhoid fever is among the diseases regularly reported in this part of Kwango province.

Walikale: 19 cases and 3 deaths recorded in Chanumbu; the population calls for urgent intervention.

Thursday, June 25, 2026 - 06:42

A cholera epidemic that began in April 2026 in the Ntoto health area, within the Kibua health zone, Walikale territory, North Kivu, continues to cause serious concern among the local population. The village of Chanumbu, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Katwa Health Center on the Ntoto road, is particularly affected by this waterborne disease, the treatment of which remains challenging.

According to information provided by Hangi Lukoo Adolphe, the head nurse at the Katwa Health Center, a total of 19 cholera cases have been recorded since the beginning of June. Among these patients, three deaths have already been reported in the village of Chanumbu, highlighting the seriousness of the health situation.

Local health facilities are facing enormous difficulties in caring for patients due to a lack of essential medicines and medical supplies. This shortage undermines the efforts of healthcare workers and further exposes the population to a rapid spread of the disease.

Local health authorities and officials at the Katwa Health Centre are urgently appealing to the relevant authorities, humanitarian organizations, and health partners for immediate assistance to the affected population. They are specifically requesting supplies of medicines, rehydration solutions, medical equipment, and water treatment products.

The population of Chanumbu and the surrounding villages now lives in fear of a further increase in cases if appropriate response measures are not implemented quickly. Health officials also emphasize the need to strengthen community awareness activities on hygiene measures, environmental sanitation, and safe drinking water consumption.

As the epidemic has persisted for several months, residents are hoping for a rapid mobilization of humanitarian actors to prevent the health crisis from worsening and to save lives.

Cholera: More than 130 cases, including 33 deaths, recorded in Zongo

Friday, July 10, 2026 - 8:22 PM

In total, 133 cases, including 33 deaths, related to the cholera epidemic have been recorded in Zongo, a town located in the South Ubangi province in the Northwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

This still provisional assessment was announced by Dr. Floribert Alongaboni, chief medical officer of the Zongo health zone, in a press address on Friday, July 9th.

He indicates that this toll is likely to rise because, he notes, the Zongo health zone is experiencing a shortage of medical supplies needed to combat the epidemic. He requests the involvement of the South Ubangi Provincial Health Division to support his health zone with medical supplies to facilitate the response to this epidemic.

Dr. Floribert Alongaboni urges the residents of Zongo to respect hygiene measures, including regular handwashing with soap or ash, and to avoid consuming unsafe water to stop the chain of contamination of this disease which has already claimed several victims.

The town of Zongo borders Bangui, the capital city of the Central African Republic, where cholera has been declared in the Bimbo district. The cases recorded in Zongo in recent days are believed to be linked to trafficking and trade between the two border towns.

Goma faces a resurgence of cholera cases

Published on Mon, 20/07/2026 - 11:37 | Modified on Mon, 20/07/2026 - 11:37

The city of Goma is facing a worrying resurgence of cholera cases recorded in several health facilities in recent weeks. Medical teams are raising the alarm as the dry season forces many vulnerable households to consume untreated water directly from Lake Kivu. The head nurse at the CCLK health center is reporting a rise in cases at this facility.

At least eighteen cases of cholera have been treated in the space of two weeks at the CCLK health center, located in the city of Goma. This worrying situation is putting additional pressure on healthcare staff already facing significant health challenges.

According to Ndaya Dubois, the head nurse at the facility, the lack of access to clean drinking water is one of the main causes of this outbreak. Due to economic hardship, many families cannot afford to buy treated water and turn to Lake Kivu for their daily needs.

“ We are actively monitoring the community and community relays are raising awareness among the population about hygiene and the consumption of clean water. Unfortunately, as we are in a dry period, a large part of the population that does not have enough resources draws water from the lake. This explains the increase in cholera cases lately ,” explains Ndaya Dubois.

Despite awareness campaigns and the establishment of chlorination sites, efforts on the ground are still struggling to contain the spread of the disease.

“ At CCLK, last week I referred at least six cases and the week before that we had more than twelve cases. So far, we have not yet managed to completely control the situation ,” he adds.

Faced with this health emergency, community liaisons are stepping up their awareness campaigns among residents. They are reminding them of the importance of respecting hygiene measures, particularly regular handwashing and drinking only clean or properly treated water.

Health professionals also emphasize the need for prompt medical attention as soon as the first symptoms of cholera appear. The disease manifests primarily as acute diarrhea and severe vomiting, which can lead to rapid dehydration and, in the most serious cases, death.

Health authorities and community actors are therefore calling on the population to follow the recommendations of health workers in order to limit the spread of this epidemic which threatens several districts of the provincial capital of North Kivu.

“ The cholera epidemic in Kwango has already caused 90 deaths out of 635 cases reported to date. As of July 24, 2026, there have been 44 deaths out of 118 cases recorded in the Boko health zone; 14 deaths out of 110 cases in the Kasongo-Lunda health zone and 32 deaths out of 407 cases recorded in the Popo Kabaka health zone, ” said Dr. Jacques Kimfuta, who is also the coordinator of the Provincial Coordination Committee for the “One Health ” approach (CPCUS).

Furthermore, the most affected health areas are those located on the banks of the Kwango River.

These include the Pont Kwango and Unissons health areas in the Boko Health Zone, six health areas in Kasongo-Lunda, the most affected being Zina-Bunketi and Dibulu. Meanwhile, in the Popokabaka Health Zone, 24 health areas are affected, with four being the most severely impacted: Popo 1, Popo 2, Popo Sector, and Lusanga.

Preventive measures

The population was advised to wash their hands regularly, to prohibit open defecation, to boil drinking water if Aqua tabs or chlorine were not used, to sanitize the environment, to decontaminate households and latrines as well as the surroundings of confirmed cholera cases.

On the same occasion, the population was asked to direct any cases of diarrhea to the nearest health centers.

Kwilu: 30 deaths and over 400 cases of cholera recorded, two new health zones affected

Fri 07/08/2026 - 15:48

The cholera outbreak has now reached four health zones in Kwilu province. After Bandundu and Kikongo, the Mokala and Ipamu health zones have also been affected by the disease. A total of 419 cases have been recorded, including 30 deaths, since the beginning of June.

No new cases are currently reported in the Bandundu and Kikongo health zones. In Kikongo, of the 166 cases identified, 8 deaths have been recorded and more than 100 patients have recovered. In the Bandundu health zone, 212 cases and 14 deaths have been reported, while more than 198 people receiving care have been discharged from health facilities after recovering, confirmed the provincial health division chief.

To date, the outbreak remains active in the Mokala and Ipamu health zones. According to health authorities, the consumption of untreated water from the Kasai River is one of the main factors contributing to the spread of the disease. The provincial health division chief, however, is reassuring the public regarding the measures implemented to contain the outbreak.

“The epidemic continues in the Mokala and Ipamu health zones. We hope that with the measures taken, we will stop the spread of the disease. Water chlorination is underway in Piopio and Panu, in the Mokala health zone, as well as in Kinkole, in the Ipamu health zone,” Dr. Jean-Pierre Matela told ACTUALITE.CD.

The response is supported by the central and provincial governments, which have provided inputs for water treatment, protective equipment for healthcare workers, and disinfection equipment for infected sites.

South Kivu: Cholera outbreak in the Kimbi-Lulenge health zone

August 19, 2026

Uvira, August 19, 2026 (ACP).- A resurgence of cholera in the Kimbi-Lulenge health zone in the Fizi territory in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo was announced Tuesday, ACP learned from health sources.

" Since August 10, 2026, the cholera epidemic has been ravaging the population of the Kimbi-Lulenge health zone, specifically in Misisi and Lulimba, two villages in this health zone, " said Mr. Bora Uzima Lukanda, chief medical officer of the Kimbi-Lulenge health zone.

He added that to date, there have already been 5 deaths, most of whom are adults over 18 years old.

According to Mr. Mwemedi Assumani, surveillance supervisor of the Kimbi-Lulenge health zone, the focus of this epidemic is located in the village of Kilombwe situated between Lulimba and Misisi where people consume unclean water from the Kimbi river which is used for gold panning activity and unimproved wells.

Since then, we have started raising awareness among the population of the Kimbi-Lulenge health zone about not consuming unclean water, not consuming uncooked food, not greeting each other with hands, and not approaching patients suffering from this disease.

The chief medical officer of the Kimbi-Lulenge health zone has asked the provincial and central governments to provide their medical facility with medicines, to take care of the sick because at this stage each patient uses their own means to get treatment, and to rehabilitate the cholera treatment center which has already been destroyed since its establishment by Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in 2021.

As a reminder, the Kimbi-Lulenge Health Zone is one of the four health zones in Fizi, located on the border of Maniema and Tanganyika provinces. ACP/FM

Maï-Ndombe: 77 deaths out of more than 1,900 recorded cholera cases

Thu 20/08/2026 - 10:32

The cholera epidemic continues to claim victims in the Maï-Ndombe province. Since the start of the epidemic, in the 6th epidemiological week of 2026, the province has recorded a cumulative total of 1,950 cases of cholera, including 77 deaths, representing a case fatality rate of 4%.

According to the epidemiological situation reported by the provincial Minister of Health, Dido Mpia Nsele, eight of the fourteen health zones in Maï-Ndombe are currently affected by the epidemic. These are Bokoro, Bolobo, Bosobe, Kwamouth, Mushie, Nioki, Oshwe, and Yumbi.

The situation remains concerning, particularly due to the recent spread of the disease. An increase in the number of cases was observed again during the 32nd epidemiological week, compared to the previous two weeks.

This development comes as the response faces a significant lack of support. No partners are currently supporting cholera response activities in the province, according to the reported health situation.

The resurgence of cholera is not new in Maï-Ndombe. The province already experienced a major outbreak in 2025, with several health zones affected. At the time, health authorities specifically warned of difficulties in accessing clean water, a factor contributing to the spread of the disease.
