105 cases of cholera recorded in one week at the Lomera mining site in Kabare

Published on Sat, 05/24/2025 - 09:01 | Modified on Sat, 05/24/2025 - 09:01

The international organization Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reports an outbreak of 105 cholera cases per week at the Lomera mining site, located in Kabare territory, South Kivu province. This worrying increase in cases has been observed consecutively over the past three weeks.

In a report published on Friday, May 23, MSF attributes this epidemic to the lack of access to drinking water in this region, where several thousand artisanal miners live in extreme overcrowding. The organization emphasizes that hygiene conditions at the Lomera site, in the Luhihi group of Birava, pose a serious problem.

In response to this situation, MSF deployed an emergency team to the area. This team noted that the epidemic had reached alarming proportions since the end of April, with a rapid increase in cases, rising from 11 to 79, then to 105 per week.

The Lomera mining site, located upstream from Lake Kivu, relies primarily on lake water, which is used untreated and unchlorinated for drinking and cooking, which contributes to the spread of cholera, MSF notes.

To respond to this crisis, MSF has been providing chlorination and distributing 30,000 liters of drinking water daily on the site since May 9. In addition, a cholera treatment unit with 20 beds has been set up to care for patients.

To date, at least 8,111 people have been vaccinated against cholera. Hygiene kits and awareness campaigns are also being deployed to limit transmission. MSF reaffirms its commitment to continuing its work until the epidemic is completely eradicated at the Lomera mining site.

DRC: Cholera outbreak in Kinshasa, making it the third most affected province in the country

Wednesday, June 11, 2025 - 06:35

The city of Kinshasa is affected by an outbreak of cholera cases. The capital began reporting cases of the disease in late April and early May 2025.

As of May 25, 11 confirmed cases and one death had been recorded, representing a case fatality rate of 9.09% after two weeks without any new cases being reported. This situation places Kinshasa in the top three provinces with a high case fatality rate, behind Sankuru and Haut-Katanga.

The Makala and Kokolo health zones are among the most affected by cholera. In response, health authorities have set up a cholera treatment center in the Ngiri-Ngiri health zone.

The DRC has accumulated at least 26,805 cases of cholera and approximately 542 deaths, representing a lethality rate of 2.02% in 10 of the 26 provinces.

South Kivu: Cholera epidemic continues to spread in health zones, with more than 400 cases and one death reported from June 1 to 8

Wednesday, June 11, 2025 - 3:07 PM

A total of 401 cases of cholera were reported in the province of South Kivu during the week of June 1 to 8, 2025. These figures were provided by the provincial Ministry of Health through its communications officer, Dr. Claude Bahizire, who warned of the increase in cases compared to the previous week.

"When we compare the past two weeks, there has been an increase in cases. The previous week, we had 394 cases per week, but this week we had 401 cases, so there has been an increase of about 7 cases. There was one death the previous week and this week there was one death in the Ibanda health zone in the city of Bukavu, while last week, the death was in the Ruzizi health zone," said Dr. Claude Bahizire.

The Katana health zone remained in first place with 160 cases this week, compared to 110 the previous week, followed by the Uvira health zone, which increased from 36 cases the previous week to 86 this week. Other health zones such as Miti-Murhesa, Ruzizi, Ibanda, Kalehe, and Minova are also affected. However, according to the provincial health division, the major challenge remains the difficulty of supplying inputs.

"We deplore the continued reporting of cases. This could lead to further deaths, especially since we are having difficulties in supplying supplies," he added.

Currently, 19 health zones continue to report cases since the beginning of January. The provincial health department is calling for compliance with hygiene measures to stop the spread of the epidemic, which has already been declared in South Kivu.

Tshopo: more than 2,000 cases and around a hundred deaths recorded (incident manager for cholera)

June 16, 2025

Kisangani, June 16, 2025 (ACP).- More than 2,000 cases of cholera and around a hundred deaths have been recorded since epidemiological week 9 in the Tshopo province, northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) , the ACP learned on Monday from a health source.

" Since epidemiological week 9, cholera has been spreading in Tshopo and today we have more than 2,000 cases with over a hundred deaths ," said Dr. Didier Gasigwa, cholera incident manager.

According to Dr. Gasigwa, this alarming context led to the activation of the incident management system by the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), following a meeting between a delegation from the Ministry of Public Health and the acting governor of Tshopo.

This delegation is staying in Tshopo as part of the launch of an emergency operation against the cholera epidemic, which is currently affecting twelve health zones, out of 25 in this province.

The response strategy is based on an integrated approach combining treatment, prevention, vaccination, disinfection of homes and contact tracing, he said.

According to the source, a hygiene awareness campaign, particularly on handwashing, is also planned in the affected areas to break the chains of transmission. This initiative is part of a national effort to combat recurring epidemics.

Tshopo has been placed among the country's health priorities, benefiting from increased support from the central government and its technical and financial partners. ACP/JF

Cholera in Maniema: 120 deaths recorded in 5 months

Published on Tue, 06/24/2025 - 5:56 PM | Modified on Tue, 06/24/2025 - 5:56 PM

Since the beginning of 2025, Maniema province has already recorded more than 3,304 cases, including 120 deaths from cholera. The director of the National Program for the Elimination of Cholera and the Fight Against Other Diarrheal Diseases, Placide Welo Okitayemba, announced this on Tuesday, June 24, in Kindu, where he is staying.

The management of the National Programme for the Elimination of Cholera and the Fight against Other Diarrheal Diseases is concerned about the cholera epidemic that has been raging in the province of Maniema since last January, with alarming figures.

" We have developed response strategies. First, we are called upon to train the province on the cholera response across all pillars, and after this training of the provincial team, we will train teams in the two most affected health zones, Kindu and Alunguli ," explained Dr. Welo.

After this training, according to him, teams will be formed and deployed on the ground to organize monitoring activities in the most affected communities.

" And there, in the framework, people will go door-to-door to raise awareness, but we are also looking at how to strengthen support structures and even look at the availability of inputs. We are already looking at how to transport inputs with Service Air ," continued the same source.

DRC: Kinshasa hit by cholera epidemic, MSF sounds the alarm

Since last May, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has officially been in a national cholera epidemic. Nearly 30,000 cases have been recorded since the beginning of 2025. While several provinces were previously affected—the two Kivus, Tanganyika, and Tshopo—the disease has now spread to certain urban areas of the city of Kinshasa, where a resurgence of cases is worrying health authorities.

With our correspondent in Kinshasa, Paulina Zidi

According to the National Institute of Public Health (INSP), Kinshasa currently has 136 cumulative cases since January, including more than 90 in recent weeks, and around twenty deaths. Eleven of the capital's twenty-three health zones are affected. Doctors Without Borders (MSF) has already deployed a cholera treatment center in the city and is working to open a second facility.

For Stéphane Goetghebuer, head of the MSF Belgium mission in the DRC , the spread of the epidemic in Kinshasa " is obviously coming from the rest of the country. It is spreading gradually, so it is not surprising to see the city affected ."

Disadvantaged neighborhoods more vulnerable

In Kinshasa, cholera first strikes the most disadvantaged neighborhoods, particularly those located in flood zones. " It's mainly the disadvantaged neighborhoods that are affected, those that suffer flooding, sometimes caused by rivers transformed into overflowing sewers ," explains Stéphane Goetghebuer.

The situation is exacerbated by a late rainy season. " Kinshasa experienced heavy rains recently, when the dry season should have started earlier. This obviously plays a role, but it's also a question of hygiene and living conditions ," he continues.

The transmission of cholera, caused by the Vibrio cholerae bacterium , is closely linked to hygiene and access to clean water . " As soon as the bacteria comes into contact with the mouth or mucous membranes, often via the fingers, infection can occur ," explains the head of the NGO .

Equateur: Cholera epidemic declared in Mbandaka

June 29, 2025

Mbandaka, June 29, 2025 (ACP).- A cholera epidemic was declared Saturday in Mbandaka, capital of the province of Equateur, in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the ACP learned from an official source.

" Our province of Equateur has been facing a resurgence of the cholera epidemic since June 24, 2025. To date, the province of Equateur has reported 14 suspected cases and one death, all living suspected cases are admitted to treatment centers for their care ," said Thomas Boyenge,

Vice Governor of Ecuador

He continued: " The disease usually manifests itself through watery diarrhea and vomiting. Therefore, to prevent the spread of cholera, I urge you to observe the rules of hygiene, including washing your hands regularly with soap and clean water, especially before eating and after going to the toilet, consuming only clean or treated water and eating well-cooked and hot food ."

The Vice Governor of Ecuador also urged the population to be vigilant.

" If you experience symptoms of cholera, go immediately to the nearest health center for better care. Stay vigilant and adopt healthy behaviors to protect your health and that of your community ," he added.

Health experts point out that several factors contribute to the resurgence of cholera, including poor hygiene conditions, lack of access to clean water and the absence of adequate sanitation infrastructure.

Cholera resurgence cases were observed in 2011, 2016 and 2017, with the number of cases constituting a public health problem in the province. ACP/CL

DRC: Cholera epidemic spreads in gold mines in Lomera, South Kivu

July 2, 2025

In early May, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) launched an emergency response to a cholera outbreak in Lomera, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The discovery of gold in the village triggered a massive population influx, which, combined with a severe lack of hygiene infrastructure, contributed significantly to the rapid spread of the disease. More than 8,000 people were vaccinated and over 600 patients treated. MSF teams worked tirelessly to treat the sick and improve access to clean water.

Until recently, Lomera was a small village on the shores of Lake Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Last December, everything changed overnight when gold was discovered in the surrounding hills. Economic insecurity, compounded by clashes between the M23/AFC armed group, the Congolese army (FARDC), and their allies, the Wazalendo militia, has made Lomera a focal point for thousands of people seeking work and financial gain.

Cholera is endemic in this region of the DRC, as Lake Kivu is contaminated with the bacteria. However, an outbreak of this magnitude remains exceptional. In Lomera, the first 13 cases were reported on April 20. Within two weeks, this number had increased by more than 700%, reaching 109 cases—a figure likely underestimated. Today, Lomera alone accounts for 95% of the cholera cases recorded in the Katana health zone, which has a population of over 275,000.

In just a few months, Lomera's population has grown from 1,500 to over 12,000. Every day, new arrivals crowd into already overcrowded shelters—sometimes as many as 20 people living in the same space. " We live in very difficult conditions, we do what we can to survive ," says Chiza Blonza, 45, who left her farm in Walungu (about 90 kilometers from Lomera) to come and work in the mines.

" All the factors conducive to a cholera outbreak are present here ," says Matilde Cilley, MSF's medical officer for the project. " We see extreme overcrowding, an alarming lack of clean water, open defecation on the hills, and a complete lack of waste management. "

MSF was the lead international organization to respond, launching an emergency response on May 9. In just four days, more than 8,000 people were vaccinated—but due to a lack of doses, only one injection could be administered, instead of the recommended two. Meanwhile, more than 600 patients, many in critical condition, were treated in a Cholera Treatment Unit (CTU), a temporary 20-bed facility set up by MSF.

“ The vast majority of our patients work in the mines, where they use contaminated lake water to extract gold from the earth, which exposes them directly to the bacteria ,” explains Dr. Théophile Amani, an MSF doctor in Lomera. “ The intense physical work, combined with heavy alcohol consumption, means that many arrive already dehydrated, even before they become infected. ”

MSF teams also installed a water treatment and distribution station on the lakeshore, providing approximately 60,000 liters of drinking water per day. 100 latrines and 25 handwashing points supervised by health promoters have been set up in the camp. “ Without significant investment in water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure, outbreaks like this are likely to recur regularly,” warns Muriel Boursier, MSF head of mission in Bukavu. “Currently, the nearest well is three kilometers away. International partners and local authorities must mobilize to implement sustainable solutions. ”

Given the constant flow of people arriving and departing, new vaccine deliveries are also essential to protect the population. “South Kivu—and eastern DRC in general—faces enormous logistical challenges in getting essential medical supplies, including vaccines, medicines, and equipment, to where they are most needed,” said Muriel Boursier, MSF head of mission in Bukavu. “ While insecurity is undoubtedly having an impact, the closure of the airports in Bukavu and Goma has had an even greater impact, significantly hampering the delivery of lifesaving aid. Furthermore, cuts in international humanitarian funding are limiting the availability of medical supplies and their distribution across the country. ”

Combating cholera epidemics remains a priority for MSF in the DRC. In 2024, medical teams treated more than 15,000 cases of cholera across the country, working with local health authorities and communities.

Cholera epidemic: Félix Tshisekedi urges government to take immediate action to halt significant increase in cases in Kinshasa

Sunday, July 6, 2025 - 12:05

Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo and seat of institutions, is experiencing a significant increase in cholera cases, particularly since late April and early May 2025, including the category of the most affected provinces. The situation remains worrying, with the spread affecting several health zones in the city of Kinshasa.

Faced with this worrying situation, President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi called for a "lucid" and "resolute" national mobilization under the coordination of the Prime Minister. He instructed the government, through the Ministry of the Interior, the Environment, Water Resources and Electricity, Health, Social Affairs, Communication and Media, in consultation with his office and the provincial government of Kinshasa, to take the following measures without delay:

"The immediate activation of the contingency plan by closely involving the provincial Health Division; the rapid deployment of medical teams, stocks of essential inputs and mobile treatment centers in the most affected areas, the systematic disinfection of water points, markets, schools and other places of high traffic, the massive distribution of drinking water, hygiene kits and water treatment products in vulnerable neighborhoods, the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance, community screening and local communication in order to raise awareness among the population to combat rumors and encourage collective adherence to health instructions," reports the minutes of the 50th meeting of the Council of Ministers.

According to the minutes of the meeting read by the government spokesperson, Félix Tshisekedi also recommends "strengthened coordination with technical and financial partners, particularly those from the WHO, UNICEF, Médecins Sans Frontières and humanitarian agencies to mobilize logistical, financial and operational support commensurate with the gravity of the situation. He said he is awaiting "a specific report on the development of the situation from the minister responsible for Health, Hygiene and Social Security.

According to Head of State Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi, the cholera epidemic is currently affecting the city-province of Kinshasa, seriously exposing the health of citizens, particularly in the most disadvantaged neighborhoods. In this time of distress, he expressed his solidarity with the bereaved families or those affected by the disease and paid a heartfelt tribute to the healthcare workers, frontline teams, and community workers who are courageously and selflessly working to save lives.

"This epidemic outbreak is not only a health emergency, it is the symptom of a chain of accumulated vulnerabilities, particularly with the recent floods which have seriously damaged sanitation infrastructure, contaminated drinking water sources and displaced thousands of people, exposing them to overcrowded and unsanitary conditions which favor the spread of cholera," said Félix Tshisekedi in his statement.

The latest epidemiological bulletin reports an alarming increase. "In the week of June 23-29, 2025 alone, four new health zones recorded cases of cholera, bringing the total number of affected areas to 25 out of the 35 in the capital, Kinshasa. Our hospital and funeral capacities are under severe strain, and the threat of a widespread epidemic, particularly in the disaster camps, is looming," President Félix Tshisekedi noted in the minutes of the meeting.

The health zones of Limete, Makala, and Kokolo are the most affected. Meanwhile, providers are facing a lack of logistical resources and supplies for treatment in several treatment centers. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is hit by a cholera epidemic, with more than 30,000 cases recorded since the beginning of 2025.

DRC: Félix Tshisekedi expresses alarm over the cholera situation in Kinshasa

The DRC capital, Kinshasa, has been hit hard by a worrying cholera epidemic. President Félix Tshisekedi made this the most important point during Friday's cabinet meeting, the minutes of which were released to us on Sunday, July 6, 2025. To date, more than 700 deaths have been recorded in the country since January, including around thirty in Kinshasa.

Published on:07/07/2025 - 05:05
By : RFI

Officially, three-quarters of the health zones in this megalopolis of some 17 to 20 million inhabitants are affected. And it is the residents of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods who are most at risk.

For President Félix Tshisekedi , the causes of this rapid spread are notably the recent floods which have seriously damaged sanitation infrastructure, contaminated drinking water sources and displaced thousands of people, exposing them to conditions of overcrowding and insalubrity.

The president's concern is also due to the fact that, he revealed, " hospital and funeral capacities are under severe strain ." He even spoke of the threat of a widespread epidemic and called for a " national, clear-headed, and resolute " mobilization .

The government is tasked with activating a contingency plan by urgently deploying medical teams, stocks of essential supplies, and mobile treatment centers to the most affected areas. According to the minutes of the government meeting, Félix Tshisekedi also ordered the systematic disinfection of water points, markets, schools, and other high-traffic areas. Authorities are expected to massively distribute drinking water, hygiene kits, and water treatment products to vulnerable neighborhoods.

In this city, which regularly faces this disease, the authorities have announced the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance, community screening and mass local communication.

Cholera in the DRC: Kinshasa in epidemic, 830 cases and 78 deaths recorded

Tuesday, July 8, 2025 - 5:12 PM

Kinshasa, the capital of the DRC, is about to be officially declared in cholera epidemic after more than a month of reporting the disease. To date, all health zones (23) have been affected. There have been 830 cases of cholera and 78 deaths, representing a fatality rate of 9.4%. According to the provincial health minister, Patrician Gongo, the majority of deaths (more than 46) are "community-related."

Faced with this worrying situation, President Félix Tshisekedi called for a "lucid and resolute" national mobilization under the coordination of the Prime Minister. He instructed the government, through the Ministries of the Interior, Environment, Water Resources and Electricity, Health, Social Affairs, Communication and Media, in consultation with his office and the Kinshasa provincial government, to take the following measures without delay:

Tshopo: more than 4,000 cases of cholera reported, including 279 deaths (provincial health division)

July 10, 2025

Kisangani, July 10, 2025 (ACP).– Four thousand four hundred and fifty (4,450) cases of cholera, including 279 deaths, have been reported in the Tshopo province in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) since the official declaration of this epidemic by the provincial governor on April 7, the ACP learned Thursday from a health source.

"Exactly, the province is in the midst of an epidemic, as declared by the authority on April 7. To date, the epidemiological situation remains alarming with 4,450 reported cases, including 279 deaths, representing a fatality rate of 6% ," said John Mondele, communications program coordinator at the provincial health division.

"The notification process began in Lowa, but today, we have 15 of the 23 health zones in Tshopo affected. This is a situation that worries us, as we continue to record new cases," he said.

According to him, the currently affected areas include Basoko, Isangi, Kabondo, Lubunga, Makiso-Kisangani, Opala, Ubundu, Wanierukula, Yabaondo, Yaisuli, Yahuma, Yakusu, Suyaleko, Koé and Yalimbongo. The latest to report a case is Yaleko, which was recently upgraded to a health zone.

To address this rise in cases, he said, the DPS has implemented several measures, including the installation of two cholera treatment centers in Kisangani and Isangi, as well as care units in health areas to reduce distances to access care. Community awareness activities are underway, alongside the distribution of water purification products such as Aquatabs and chlorine, as well as the implementation of the WASH package in public institutions.

Regarding vaccination, Mr. Mondele said the province plans to cover the three areas identified as hotspots: Lubunga, Wanierukula and Opala.

"We have enough vaccine in our stocks to cover these three areas, or approximately 475,580 people aged one year and older. This represents nearly 96% of the target population in these areas," he said.

The source further indicated that the campaign will be officially launched by the provincial governor and will run from July 15 to 20. It could be extended to all 23 health zones as soon as new doses arrive from the central level.

Mr. Mondele stressed the need for the involvement of all stakeholders, government, partners and communities to break the chain of transmission.

"The community must understand that this epidemic affects everyone. Everyone must increase hygiene, avoid consuming untreated water and share information ," he concluded.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cholera is a highly contagious acute intestinal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. This infection is transmitted through the consumption of food or water contaminated with feces and can cause severe, watery diarrhea and dehydration, which can be fatal.

DRC: Cholera epidemic affecting the country continues to spread

For several months, the DRC has been facing a cholera epidemic. More than 33,000 cases have already been recorded in several provinces of the country since the beginning of the year, with more than 700 deaths. Conflict zones in the east of the country are particularly affected, as is the capital, Kinshasa, which records nearly 130 new cases each week.

With our correspondent in Kinshasa, Paulina Zidi

This is the 27th week of disease surveillance, and according to theCongolese Minister of Health, the epidemic is in an acute phase, with nearly 1,500 new cases detected each week and a case fatality rate of around 2%. Seventeen of the country's 26 provinces are now affected. Tshopo has the most cases, followed by South Kivu and the capital.

In Kinshasa, cases have been reported in 25 of the 35 health zones. Three treatment facilities have been operational for several days, two more were scheduled to open this Thursday, and three treatment centers have yet to be deployed quickly. All patients are being treated free of charge, according to the authorities.

" We have enough treatment for everyone ," the Minister of Health reassures. Samuel Kamba encourages people experiencing symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea to get tested and treated.

The minister reiterated that hygiene is crucial in combating the spread of this epidemic. He also promised that drinking water tanks would be made available by government services to residents of the capital's hardest-hit neighborhoods.

Kinshasa: Cholera epidemic kills 28 in Kokolo health zone

July 11, 2025038

The Kokolo health zone, which encompasses all the military camps in the Congolese capital, has been hit hard by the cholera epidemic currently raging in Kinshasa. According to a press release issued on Friday, July 11, by Dr. Amisi Kengea Lewis, chief medical officer of the zone (MCZ), 28 community deaths have been recorded out of a total of 368 confirmed cases.

"These community deaths involve people who died at home, before even being able to receive hospital care. This reflects a worrying lack of awareness of the disease in the community," explained Dr. Amisi.

Adults mostly affected

Adult men and women make up the majority of those affected, while children appear to be less at risk, according to observations by medical staff on site.

To address this outbreak, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is providing logistical and medical support, including the supply of medicines. The health zone also benefits from support from the Provincial Health Division and the military health corps.

"We have set up a cholera treatment unit within the Kokolo camp. All patients are treated there free of charge, with medical, psychosocial and nutritional monitoring," said the chief medical officer of the area.

Prevention: simple but vital actions

To curb the spread of cholera, Dr. Amisi emphasizes preventive measures: - Use of boiled or filtered water

– Rigorous hand hygiene

– Proper cooking of food, especially vegetables

– Careful washing of fruits and vegetables

– Avoid self-medication, especially antibiotics and antidiarrheals without medical advice

– Use of oral vaccine, effective for six months

– A preventable but still deadly disease

– Cholera, caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae, is transmitted primarily through the ingestion of contaminated water or food. Symptoms include acute diarrhea, vomiting, fever, fatigue, convulsions, and rapid dehydration.

– Access to drinking water, including adequate sanitation facilities and good hygiene remain essential means to prevent the spread of this epidemic.

Maï-Ndombe: Cholera epidemic officially declared with 233 cases and 30 deaths (governor)

July 13, 2025

Inongo, July 13, 2025 (ACP).- The cholera epidemic was officially declared and confirmed on Saturday with 233 cases and 30 deaths in the province of Mai-Ndombe, in the southwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), we learned on Sunday from an official source.

" Residents of the province of Mai-Ndombe, dear compatriots, I wish to inform you that our province is facing for the umpteenth time an outbreak of cases of the cholera epidemic since the 26th epidemiological week of the year 2025, that is to say the week of June 23 to 29, 2025 according to the technicians where the first case was recorded and today we have reached 233 cases with 30 deaths ," declared Lebon Nkoso, provincial governor.

" The health zones (ZS) of Bolobo, Yumbi, Nioki, Mushie and Kwamouth are the most affected. Of the first three samples taken and sent to the National Institute for Biological Research (INRB) for analysis, two (2) tested positive. In view of these statistics and the results of the INRB, I am obliged to officially declare a cholera epidemic in the province of Mai-Ndombe ," he said.

The governor maintained that to date, an average of 25 patients are being treated in the various cholera treatment centers in the 7 affected health zones.

" The late arrival of patients at treatment centers remains the main cause of death and the difficulty of supplying drinking water means that the population resorts to water from the Congo River, the Kasai River, Kwa, Nfimi, Lukenie, Lokoro and Lake Mai-Ndombe ," he lamented.

He stressed the preventive measures to be adopted by the population.

" This is an opportunity to invite all technical and financial partners to be present in the province and all health-related services to join our technical health services in order to organize a coordinated response to this umpteenth cholera epidemic in our province ," added Mr. NKoso.

He also called on the population to refer anyone showing signs of cholera to the nearest center because cholera treatment is free.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cholera is an acute diarrheal disease caused by bacteria found in unsafe water, contaminated food, and unsanitary environments. Symptoms include sudden, severe diarrhea, frequent vomiting, intense diarrhea, dry mouth, extreme fatigue, and lack of urination. This disease is caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholerae, serogroup O1. Fight against cholera: “the epidemiological situation is deteriorating in the DRC” (Minister of Health)

July 14, 2025

Kinshasa, July 14, 2025 (ACP).- The Ministry of Public Health, Hygiene and Social Security informed the population on Monday about the deteriorating cholera epidemiological situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the ACP learned from a press release.

"During epidemiological week 27 (EW 27), the country recorded a 19% increase in cholera cases compared to the previous week, with 2,085 cases reported compared to 1,757. This outbreak was accompanied by 95 reported deaths, including three healthcare providers," it read.

"The situation is particularly worrying at the *Mama Koko* orphanage, in the CASA pavilion, where 60 children have developed neurological problems, 16 of whom have unfortunately died," the statement said.

The document also reports 83 stool samples analyzed, 35 of which tested positive, showing a positivity rate of 42%, which indicates active circulation of the cholera vibrio in several provinces of the country.

"Tshopo province remains the epicenter of the epidemic with 793 reported cases, representing nearly half (49%) of the national total. Other provinces such as Équateur (Mbandaka SV) and Lomami are also experiencing a rapid increase in cases, with 40% and 50% increases respectively in the space of a few days ," the statement added.

Faced with this growing epidemic, the ministry announced the continuation of vaccination campaigns in 11 health zones spread across the provinces of Tanganyika, Maniema, Haut-Katanga, and Tshopo. An expansion of vaccination coverage is also being planned to 11 new "hotspot" areas, notably in Kinshasa and Équateur, with a view to curbing the spread.

Furthermore, a technical survey was carried out on the reception sites for victims of the recent floods in the capital (Tata Raphaël Stadium, Martyrs Stadium and Kinkole), in order to prevent the risk of epidemics in these crowded environments.

In its press release, the ministry welcomed the official delivery of 20 tonnes of cholera kits by UNICEF, a logistical support deemed "essential".

The Congolese government, through the Ministry of Public Health, reaffirms its commitment to combating this health crisis and calls on the population to remain vigilant, to strictly adhere to hygiene rules, as well as to actively collaborate with response teams.

"The cholera epidemic remains a serious threat to public health, and its control requires joint action by the State, technical and financial partners, and above all local communities," concluded Minister Samuel Roger Kamba, quoted in the press release. ACP/CL

Health emergency in Mushie: Imminent humanitarian intervention requested to fight cholera

July 16, 2025

Kinshasa, July 16, 2025 (ACP). – An imminent humanitarian intervention has been requested by the civil society of Mai-Ndombe and Plateau (SOCIMAP) to combat cholera, which is decimating the population of the town of Mushi, in the province of Mai Ndombe in the west of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the ACP learned Wednesday in a press release.

" As the Coordinator of Civil Society, I am issuing a solemn and urgent warning to the Congolese and international public. The town of Mushie is currently in the grip of a cholera epidemic of alarming severity, which is unfortunately decimating our population. The health situation is critical and requires immediate and concerted action ," read the Socimap press release signed by its Provincial Coordinator, Mr. Lambert Mputu Mokazina.

According to the source, the number of cases continues to rise, and local health facilities are overwhelmed and severely under-resourced to cope with the scale of this crisis. Access to drinking water is limited, and hygiene conditions are precarious, thus promoting the rapid spread of this deadly disease. Lives are lost every day, and the suffering of our fellow citizens is immense.

The statement said that in the face of this ongoing humanitarian catastrophe, an emergency humanitarian intervention is not only necessary, but imminent.

" We urge international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and Doctors Without Borders (MSF), development partners, as well as the Congolese government and donors to mobilize without delay ," continued the statement signed by Mr. Mputu.

The city urgently needs medical equipment and medicines to treat the sick, qualified healthcare personnel to strengthen the teams on site, sanitation and access to drinking water to slow the spread of the epidemic, and awareness campaigns to educate the population on preventive measures, the statement said.

The same source indicated that every minute counts, as inaction in the face of this situation would lead to even more devastating consequences.

North Kivu: Two deaths from cholera confirmed in the Mweso health zone

Published on Thu, 08/14/2025 - 1:11 PM | Modified on Thu, 08/14/2025 - 1:11 PM

Two deaths from cholera were confirmed on Thursday, August 14, by the provincial health division in the Mweso health zone, North Kivu. These deaths concern displaced persons from the Ngeri Tea Garden camps, in the Kihondo group, Rutshuru territory. They occurred on Tuesday, August 12, at the Mweso General Referral Hospital.

For several days, the town of Mweso has been hosting thousands of displaced people fleeing violence between the rebels of the AFC/M23 coalition, supported by Rwanda; and the FARDC with their Wazalendo partners. These displaced people come mainly from the chiefdom of Bwito (Rutshuru) and the northeast of the neighboring territory of Walikale.

They are concentrated in schools, churches, and with some host families in the village of Miti and in the center of Mweso, according to local actors.

Conditions in these spontaneous sites are very precarious, with a lack of assistance in terms of drinking water, hygiene and sanitation, which greatly increases the risk of the spread of the cholera epidemic, already declared several weeks ago in several health zones of North Kivu.

Faced with this situation, local and humanitarian authorities are calling for emergency humanitarian assistance for these displaced people, in order to prevent a worsening of the epidemic in the region.

The DRC is facing a major cholera crisis in 2025, with several thousand cases and hundreds of deaths across the country, the Minister of Public Health, Hygiene and Prevention, Roger Kamba, indicated a few weeks ago.
