Kasaï Oriental: 87 cases of cholera recorded (Provincial Minister of Health)
September 3, 2024
Mbuji-Mayi, September 2, 2024 (ACP).- The cumulative number of cholera cases is 87 with eight deaths since the official declaration of the epidemic last June by the governor of Kasai Oriental (center of the Democratic Republic of Congo), ACP learned Monday from an official source.
"We would like to inform the population of Kasai Oriental that to date, the cumulative number of cholera cases is 87 with eight deaths. This cholera epidemic has reached almost 14 health zones out of the 19 in our province, and for the city of Mbuji-Mayi, nine urban health zones out of the 10 are affected by this epidemic. These are the health zones of Bipemba, Bonzola, Dibindi, Diulu, Kansele, Lubilanji, Lukelenge, Muya and Nzaba ," said the provincial Minister of Health, Dr. Daniel Kazadi Tshilumbayi, during the presentation of the epidemiological bulletin for week 35 (August 25 to 31) of the year 2024.
On this occasion, the provincial minister deplored the cases of deaths at home while calling on the population to refer any suspected case to a health facility.
"The evolution of the curve of this disease shows that the cases are oscillating up to a maximum of nine cases in a week. We note that the health zones which run along the Muya and Lubilanji rivers (Mbuji-Mayi) are the most affected and it also comes back to us that many of our compatriots die in the community without having contacted the health services" , he deplored.
"The provincial government is taking action to stop this epidemic. To date, this provincial institution is providing medical care to the sick, raising awareness in the community and carrying out water chlorination and dignified and safe burial of people who died of cholera," he said.
Rains and the start of the school year pose serious threats to contamination
Dr. Daniel Kazadi also pointed out the periods constituting serious threats of contamination of this infectious and contagious, but preventable, disease, before showing its mode of transmission and its prevention.
"The rainy season that has just begun and the return to school that took place this Monday must be considered as serious threats for the contamination or transmission of this disease, cholera. The rains that are coming actually promote the drainage of waste, including contaminated fecal matter, towards our rivers and the various water wells. The return to school promotes promiscuity and also food practices that are vicious," warned the provincial Minister of Health.
"Cholera is transmitted by the ingestion of food and water often infected by the feces of people infected with cholera. To avoid cholera, we recommend that the population ensure the consumption of clean water and food, avoid eating what is exposed to the open air, reassure themselves of the quality of what is consumed and especially insist on the long and prolonged cooking of food, wash their hands regularly with soap or failing that with ash ," he explained.
Some signs of the disease have also been revealed, namely repeated vomiting, the emission of liquid stools which we call liquid diarrhea, especially if the stools are in the form of rice water. ACP/ODM
