Four people were killed by crocodiles in the space of two months, in Kyavinyonge, a lakeside town located on the shore of Lake Edouard in Beni (North Kivu).
The latest case dates back to Wednesday March 20.

The president of Kyavinyonge civil society, Daniel Malekani, deplores this situation and pleads for measures to protect people by the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation (ICCN).
“ We have just recorded at least four deaths during these two months, but this is really not a usual situation. And how is it that animals will also execute us in such a way? We continue to question the ICCN which is supposed to protect animals, fauna and flora, why has this animal become a threat to the population? There are no preventive measures so that we cannot really suffer from such unfortunate situations ,” he regretted.
In the meantime, Daniel Makelani calls on the population to be vigilant:
“ We call on the population to remain calm and to see how to protect themselves even if it is quite difficult to protect yourself since almost all activities take place on the waters of Lake Edward while being on the banks. And fishing activities, water drawing activities, all these activities take place on the shores of Lake Edward .”
While deploring these incidents, the spokesperson for the ICCN in North Kivu, Bienvenue Bwende, announces that measures have been taken to deal with the crocodile attacks. He also calls on fishermen to respect fishing regulations on Lake Edouard, the only guarantee of their safety, according to him.
