  • A Drake University freshman died Sunday of a respiratory condition that university officials said did not appear to be related to the H1N1 virus.

Victorya Van-Pelt, a freshman from Little Rock, Ark., was hospitalized on Aug. 24, the first day of classes, said Drake spokeswoman Lisa Lacher. Van-Pelt, 18, died at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

?She just had a rapid decline in her condition,? Lacher said.

Van-Pelt died of acute upper respiratory distress, Drake President David Maxwell said in an e-mail to students and faculty members this afternoon.

?Although the precise cause of her condition has not yet been determined, Victorya?s family was told that it was not viral (including H1N1) in origin,?;) Maxwell wrote.

An autopsy is planned, Lacher said.:tiphat:http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20090907/NEWS/90907011/1001/

DES MOINES, Iowa - A Drake University student has died two weeks after she was hospitalized with symptoms of a respiratory condition.

Drake University officials say Victorya Van-Pelt's illness did not appear to be related to the H1N1 virus.

Van-Pelt, of Little Rock, Ark., was hospitalized on Aug. 24, the first day of classes.

The 18-year-old died at Mercy Medical Center.

Drake spokeswoman Lisa Lacher says Van-Pelt had a rapid decline in her condition, and died of "acute upper respiratory distress."
