NURSES at Doomadgee Hospital were "snowed under" dealing with a swine flu epidemic in the days before the death of a four-year-old girl, an inquest has heard.
The girl, who cannot be named for cultural reasons, died on July 23 last year in the hospital, in the community which lies inland from the Gulf of Carpentaria in north-west Queensland.
The inquest has heard that she was seen by nurses at the hospital on at least three occasions prior to her death, but was not admitted to the hospital and did not see the doctor until the night before she died.
Endorsed enrolled nurse Sue Kennard, who gave evidence this morning via telephone, told the inquest that she had examined the girl when she presented for the first time on the night of July 19, 2009.
On that occasion, Ms Kennard said the girl had a temperature but "wasn't displaying signs of a distressed child".
