SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic (AP) - The Dominican Republic's newly sworn-in vice president has been hospitalized with dengue fever, his doctors said Monday.
Vice President Rafael Albuquerque was admitted to a Santo Domingo clinic late Sunday, a day after being sworn in for a second, four-year term alongside President Leonel Fernandez.
Doctors said the Caribbean country's No. 2 official had fever, a low platelet count and symptoms of an acute viral infection.
He did not show symptoms of more life-threatening dengue hemorrhagic fever, Dr. Gustavo Rojas said. Albuquerque will be kept in the hospital and observed for at least four days.
Fernandez's office confirmed the report but did not offer any additional details. Albuquerque did not appear ill during Saturday's inauguration.
Dengue is common in the Caribbean, and at least 700 cases of the mosquito-borne virus have been registered in the Dominican Republic this year, resulting in four deaths. Last year more than 25 people in the country died of the disease.
