Santo Domingo. The Dominican Minister of Agriculture, Osmar Benitez, today confirmed the appearance of two outbreaks of avian influenza in the Espaillat province (northeast), but said that this virus does not affect humans.

Outbreaks of the disease, subtype H5N2, were detected in the localities of Corozo and Quebrada Honda, according to the official's statements.
Through the Twitter of the Ministry of Agriculture, Benitez explained that the national regulations and the international protocol will be followed to establish a quarantine of the two affected areas.

He also reported that he met yesterday with chicken producers in the municipality of Moca, belonging to Espaillat, to discuss this issue.

[h=1]Bird flu outbreak: a veil of secrecy shrouds poultry producers[/h] Santo Domingo.- A veil of secrecy has shrouded Dominican Republic?s poultry producers over the outbreak of bird flu detected in northern Espaillat province, on fear of stating a position after Agriculture minister Osmar Ben?tez confirmed its presence in that area.
On Tues. Agriculture Ministry said its officials and poultry sector representatives met to establish a protocol to deal with the cases and contain the virus. ?We have already defined a work plan in that sense and we want to clarify that we have a team of technicians working on the eradication of the outbreak.?
Poultry sector sources quoted by Diario Libre affirm that there are more than nine million laying hens, of which 60,000 are under observation in Espaillat province due to the outbreak detected in the towns of Corozo and Quebrada Honda.
 
Rivas resigns from IA Commission due to lack of support from Agriculture

Faced with inaction, lack of financial support and distrust in the technicians of the General Directorate of Livestock (DIGEGA), Dr. Enriquillo Rivas resigned from the Commission for Evaluation and Control of Avian Influenza (IA), Ministry of Agriculture.

Rivas complained about the late placement or none of the mobile sanitary-military control stations in specific areas. In addition, he recalled that the country would come three scientists specialized in Avian Pathology to evaluate the outbreaks and to abound on the subsequent policy on Avian Influenza.

He also said that the meetings of the Commission have been extinguished and their calls badly coordinated and few quorums. As far as I know, there is no update of reports on the LAVACEN and the tests carried out in recent months.

By pointing out that in the world there are almost 80 positive countries with outbreaks of high and low pathogenicity of AI, so that at any moment the Dominican Republic will once again exhaust the problem in an intensity that only God will know.
