Following the first case of cholera reported in the Dominican Republic, Dominican President Leonel Fernandez convened an emergency meeting to take stock, with a group of important ministers, on the effectiveness of measures adopted to fight against the spread cholera.

Many Haitians work in the Dominican Republic and because cholera infections often do not show symptoms, the water-borne disease could easily cross the border, WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl told a U.N. news briefing in Geneva.

"It is completely expected that there will be cases in the Dominican Republic. We are seeing the first signs of these cases and we are working with the government of the Dominican Republic to prepare," Hartl said. He estimated the number of infections as "still in single digits, probably."

In response, the government of Dominican Republic has a national plan aimed at preventing and controlling cholera outbreak in the country. This response includes enhancing surveillance, water and sanitation services and education. They are also focussing on prompt and appropriate care for those who become infected.

Public Health confirms the 20th case of cholera

Santo Domingo.- The Public Health Ministry today confirmed the 20th cholera case in the country, four of which were detected last weekend, with people affected in four of the 31 provinces and in the National District.
