Dog Flu Outbreak in New Jersey
Thursday, 24 Jul 2008,
Several New Jersey counties reported cases of the dog flu.
Confirmed cases of the dog flu were reported in Mercer, Burlington and Sussex counties, New Jersey officials said.
Canine influenza can sound like kennel cough but it doesn't go away -- and it can be fatal.
Symptoms include a low-grade fever, nasal discharge and persistent cough that could last up to three weeks. Severe cases include high fever, increased respiratory rates with difficulty breathing and other signs of pneumonia.
The virus can also be transmitted by humans who have contact with several dogs.
Veterinarians said the best thing to do is keep your dog away from places such as kennels, grooming salons and dog parks.
The cases in Burlington and Sussex counties are the first reported since the virus hit New Jersey in 2005, said state veterinarian Colin Campbell.
