Abstract
INTRODUCTION:

Influenza infection in pregnancy is associated with increased maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality. Administration of the influenza vaccine during pregnancy has been reported to decrease certain adverse perinatal outcomes. Our objective was to determine if influenza vaccination during pregnancy decreases the risk of preeclampsia.
METHODS:

A retrospective chart review was performed of patients who received and did not receive the influenza vaccine at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center from September 2011 to February 2012. Demographic characteristics and confounding variables were compared between the two groups. Outcome variables included the development of mild preeclanmpsia, severe preeclampsia, and eclampsia.
RESULTS:

Results were compared using odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (). Our study group had more Hispanic (OR 1.780) and obese women (OR 1.783) and less African American women (OR 0.521) than the control group. The rate of mild preeclampsia did not differ between the groups (OR 1.258). The rate of severe preeclampsia was decreased in our study group (OR 0.476). Compared with general population rates of severe preeclampsia (3.5-4.5%), women who received the influenza vaccine in our study group had a significant decrease in the risk of severe preeclampsia (1.56%, z=2.237%, P<.05).(Table is included in full-text article.)
CONCLUSION:

: Our study revealed that women receiving the influenza vaccine during pregnancy had decreased rates of severe preeclampsia when compared with the rate of severe preeclampsia in the general population. Further population-based studies are needed to confirm this benefit of the influenza vaccine.
