MUMBAI: Surgeons from the ENT department of Bhagwati Hospital, Borivli, had to deal with a unique case recently; a 40-year-old fisherman was brought
there with a live fish stuck in his throat and it had to be removed as an emergency procedure.

Senior surgeon Rajesh Yadav said the fisherman, Prem Singh, resided near I C Colony in Borivli (W). On the day of the incident, he was fishing in the nearby Gorai creek and happened to net two fishes-each about five inches long-and was trying to retrieve them from the net.

"He told us that he removed one fish, held it with his teeth and then tried to remove the other one from the net,'' Yadav said. "As he was handling the second fish, the one in his mouth started twitching and slid into his throat and got stuck,'' Yadav added. The fisherman choked and became breathless and it was in this state that he came to Bhagwati Hospital for treatment.

Another surgeon, Mudit Mittal, revealed that the patient had tried to remove the fish with his hands and the effort resulted in a swelling in the throat. "We first took an X-ray and confirmed the position of the fish in his throat and then inserted an endoscope to carry out the procedure,'' he said. The doctors used special forceps with which they managed to remove the fish and finally brought relief to Singh.
