Why is China not reporting the details of individuals who died from an A(H7N9) infection, not even to WHO?

Throughout most of April, Chinese officials identified the age, sex, and geographic location of infected individuals who died. To date, the FluTrackers membership has been able to associate 29 of these deaths with previously reported A(H7N9) cases. However, the publicly available information on recent A(H7N9) deaths has been limited.

In early May, the National Health and Family Planning Commission in China appears to have made a decision to restrict the details of individuals who died. Since May 2, the World Health Organization (WHO) provides an updated death count but does not identify case details or even the province or municipality in which the deaths occurred (May 2 link). The fact that WHO has not been informed of the details of these deaths is apparent in the May 9 weekly report prepared by WHO. While a total cumulative death count is reported, conspicuously absent from the map is the number of deaths in each of the provinces or municipalities. In every previous weekly report WHO provided a total case count including the number of deaths for each province or municipality.

According to a media report from Xinhua yesterday there are now total of 35 deaths associated with A(H7N9) in China. Will the China be more forth coming about the details of these recent A(H7N9) deaths? Other wise, what is China hiding by not reporting the demographics of A(H7N9) cases that have died?

I haven't a precise idea about this issue.

I've seen some of the recent deaths details listed on Ifeng website (for example, Yesterday Death: http://news.ifeng.com/mainland/special/h7n9/content-3/detail_2013_05/15/25325455_0.shtml ).

It is not enough, clearly, but this is the current status of information from China.

36 Cumulative H7N9 Deaths To Date

Today, WHO announced a cumulative total of 36 deaths from A(H7N9) (link), all of which occurred in China. As noted in post #1 above, detailed information on 29 individuals who contracted A(H7N9) and died is publicly available (See FluTrackers case listing).

Today, the official count of deaths from Jiangsu Province is 8 (link) and from Zhejiang Province is 9 (link). As shown in the table below, information on 4 of the deaths from Jiangsu and 3 deaths from Zhejiang have not yet been made public.
