Waiting on the World Health Organization (WHO) for MERS-CoV update, September 17, 2013

The last WHO update on the MERS-CoV outbreak was on September 7, 2013, 10 days ago (link). That update reported on the two new cases and two deaths officially reported by the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Health (SA MOH) on September 5, 2013 (link).

Since September 5, 2013, the SA MOH of has reported 13 new MERS-CoV cases and 3 deaths:

WHO has not published an update about any of these deaths or the 13 new cases. Perhaps more concerning is that on September 1, 2013, the SA MOH reported the recovery of two, presumably, previously reported cases; a 26-year-old patient from Hafar Al-Batin and a 19-year-old individual from Riyadh. WHO has not officially announced the recovery of these two patients.

A review of the case data from the published WHO updates does not clearly identify either a 26-year-old or a 19-year-old as being previously reported to WHO by the SA MOH from either of these areas (link).

We may be rapidly approaching a breakdown in communication between WHO and the SA MOH regarding MERS-CoV cases in Saudi Arabia.

#119 - Age 56, health care worker from Medina, Saudi Arabia Death

#120 - Age 53, from Riyadh with multiple comorbidities, Saudi Arabia Death

September 8th report:

#121- Woman, 74, contact with a confirmed case, multiple comorbidites, hospitalized in ICU, Al Batin - Saudi Arabia

#122 - Woman, 64, multiple comorbidities, hospitalized in ICU, Riyadh - Saudi Arabia

#123 - Woman, 75, hospitalized in stable condition, Riyadh - Saudi Arabia

#124 - Man, 74, contact of previous case, Medina - Saudi Arabia Death

September 10th report:

#125 - Age 22, asymptomatic, Medina - Saudi Arabia

#126 - Age 24, asymptomatic, health care worker, Medina - Saudi Arabia

#127 - Age 60, asymptomatic, Riyadh - Saudi Arabia

#128 - Age 47, stable condition, Riyadh - Saudi Arabia

September 11th report:

#129 - Woman, 51, contact of confirmed case, stable condition, Riyadh - Saudi Arabia

#130 - Woman, 47, contact of confirmed case, health care worker, mild symptoms, stable condition, Riyadh - Saudi Arabia

#131 - Woman, 39, contact of confirmed case, health care worker, mild symptoms, stable condition, Riyadh - Saudi Arabia

#132 - Man, 38, contact of confirmed case, health care worker, stable condition, Riyadh - Saudi Arabia

This total is 16.

The last WHO report on coronavirus infections was September 7th and listed these individuals:

#112 - Man, 30, health care worker, hospitalized in ICU in Riyadh - Saudi Arabia

#113 - Man, 47, multiple comorbidities, hospitalized in intensive care - Al Batin, Saudi Arabia

#114 - Woman, 41, health care worker, Riyadh - Saudi Arabia Death

#115 - Woman, 79, multiple comorbidities, contact of a previous case - Al Batin, Saudi Arabia Death

So that means WHO is missing cases #117-#132, inclusive, for a total of 16 cases.
