I personally think that:

- on the one hand the Dutch mink breeders, and their farms must be protected and really supported, because they will teach us much more than these 15 years of mismanagement ...

- on the other hand, the bamboo rat breeders, they are also people to protect, help and support.

that standards laboratories and honest researchers are needed to supervise them, that should be possible.

I received this, this evening:

Reckoning With The Dead: Journalist Goes Inside An NYC COVID-19 Disaster Morgue

Listen to audio interview of reporter:

https://www.npr.org/sections/health-...medium=twitter

reporters article:

"..Over the past two months, the medical examiner’s office has transformed into a hub-and-spoke organization for the collection, transport and storage of corpses. It has installed more than 100 refrigerated trailers outside 58 hospitals in all five boroughs. A planning team plots out response calls in order of urgency. A fueling truck is sent around to fill up each refrigerated trailer once a day. All of it happens 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The core mission is to vastly expand the city’s storage capacity, easing the burden on undertakers and gravediggers who are backlogged with bodies and inundated with requests. Before the pandemic, the medical examiner’s traditional morgues could store up to 900 bodies. Capacity is now at least five times that..."

Schools nationwide brace for cuts from new financial crisis

By JEFF AMY today

... The financial crisis wrought by COVID-19 has left America’s more than 13,000 school systems wrestling with the likelihood of big budget cuts. In some, it already has spoiled dreams of expanded funding and teacher pay raises. Advocates are pushing for more federal aid to schools as researchers warn budget woes could lead to massive teacher layoffs — and less learning.

AFT President Randi Weingarten said schools will need more money, not less, to protect students and teachers from COVID-19 and help students.

... “If you don’t have this, states are going to be doing huge budget cuts for schools, which would necessarily mean more layoffs and fewer services,” Weingarten said. “At the same time, this is a bridge year when kids have more instructional needs and need more services.”

I hope they can get more federal aid, Mary. Otherwise states with regressive systems that rely only on property taxes will need to raise those taxes even further. Also teaching staff might be reduced now that people are used to online teaching. I don't think we can go on with mass home schooling once we get back to normal, (will we?), but the schools could have low paid 'minders' monitor kids who are taught via online courses at physical schools.

https://www.pigprogress.net/Health/A...-boar-590693E/

https://www.arte.tv/fr/videos/RC-019...onne-le-monde/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Center...and_Prevention

https://mailchi.mp/oie.int/the-oies-...ombat-covid-19

Environmental group warns of coronavirus masks, gloves polluting oceans

by: NBC News Channel

ANTIBES, FRANCE (NBC) – The coronavirus pandemic is having an impact worldwide — even, apparently, under the sea.

Environmentalist Laurent Lombard shot video of the seabed off the French Riviera littered with masks and gloves widely used to protect against COVID-19.

... Lombard wrote, “Knowing that more than two-billion masks have been ordered, we’ll soon have more masks than jellyfish in the Mediterranean.”

New coronavirus losing potency, top Italian doctor says

ROME (Reuters) - The new coronavirus is losing its potency and has become much less lethal, a senior Italian doctor said on Sunday.

“In reality, the virus clinically no longer exists in Italy,” said Alberto Zangrillo, the head of the San Raffaele Hospital in Milan in the northern region of Lombardy, which has borne the brunt of Italy’s coronavirus contagion.

“The swabs that were performed over the last 10 days showed a viral load in quantitative terms that was absolutely infinitesimal compared to the ones carried out a month or two months ago,” he told RAI television.

MILAN
- Covid-19 "from a clinical point of view no longer exists". The San Raffaele head of Milan Alberto Zangrillo, director of intensive care, is convinced of this. Words that immediately ignited the controversy among the experts, with expressions of bewilderment and condemnation especially by the scientists who are part of the technical scientific committee.

Seems a solidly grounded observation.
Obviously the many people who are studying the virus are not as convinced, but they are not in the front lines. Perhaps it would be useful to reexamine how SARS rose and fell.
As a layman, the comment by the Chinese that they needed international cooperation because they no longer had enough sick people to test the vaccine candidates seems very consistent with the perspective laid out by Dr Zangrillo.

the virus genetics didn't change, but maybe the envelope
which -AFAIU- is made from the host cell's wall

or it may interact with other microbes that depend on weather
or distancing, it is not well understood why some cases worsen after 2 weeks.

or more superspreading now with lower initial doses

There's a few opinions offered below. One is that early treatment is helping. Another below is that we have more time on our hands to notice the milder cases. If the virus itself really hasn't changed, then it was a mouse that roared too loudly.

https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/...-zangrillo-about-the-covid-19-virus-in-italy/
Prof Martin Hibberd, Professor of Emerging Infectious Disease, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, said:
“One explanation for this change in observations might be because of a declining number of cases, where that has been achieved. We know that the virus can infect many (and perhaps the majority) of people without producing any obvious or serious symptoms, while even in those with clear symptoms, 80% have mild disease. During a major outbreak, those mild or inapparent cases are likely to be overlooked. However, in a situation where the numbers of severe cases are falling, there may be time to start observing people with less severe symptoms – giving the impression that the virus is changing.”
