Swine Flu Killed 36 Kids, Most With Brain Disorders (Update1)
2009-09-03 22:27:55.667 GMT

(Adds CDC director’s comments beginning in fourth
paragraph.)

By Tom Randall
Sept. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Swine flu has killed at least 36
children in the U.S. since April and proved deadliest for kids
with brain disorders or bacterial infections such as strep, a
study found.

Two-thirds of the children had underlying health
conditions, and more than 90 percent of those conditions were
brain related, including developmental delay, epilepsy and
cerebral palsy
, according to today’s report by the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention.
U.S. health officials plan a vaccination campaign for mid-
October that will focus on the most-affected patient groups,
including children, pregnant women and adults with underlying
health conditions. Kids with the flu who are hospitalized or
have chronic health conditions should be given antiviral
medications as soon as possible, the CDC said today.
“The take-home message from this study is that
particularly kids with underlying conditions need to be treated
promptly if they develop fever,” said Thomas Frieden, director
of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in a
conference call in Atlanta.

Fastest Moving

Swine flu, also known as H1N1, is the fastest-moving
influenza pandemic, sweeping across 177 countries since it was
identified in April, according to the CDC. As many as 1 million
people have been infected in New York alone, city health
commissioner Tom Farley said at a press conference Sept. 1.
Children accounted for 7.5 percent of the 477 U.S. deaths
confirmed by laboratory tests from April to Aug. 8, the CDC said
today. Those numbers underreport the actual fatality totals
because many patients are never tested for swine flu, the CDC
said.
Doctors and hospitals have reported scattered outbreaks
across the U.S., with the largest concentration in southeastern
states, the CDC’s Frieden said today. Each year there are 50 to
100 deaths from swine flu, Frieden said. The cases in today’s
report are unusual because they occurred during summer months,
when flu usually isn’t active.
“When you get the flu, your immune system can be a little
weakened; you can be more susceptible to other infections,”
Frieden said. “That’s an important message for doctors: to know
that if someone has the flu and they get better and then they
get worse again with a fever, that’s a clue that maybe they
should be treated with antibiotics.”
Seasonal flu kills about 36,000 people each year,
according to the CDC. Neurological disorders are also associated
with increased risk for death from seasonal flu, though appear
to have a greater impact with swine flu, according to today’s
report.

Cow Urine, Herbal Remedies Gain as India Swine Flu Deaths Climb
2009-09-03 18:30:01.0 GMT

By Saikat Chatterjee and Arush Chopra
Sept. 4 (Bloomberg) -- The rising death toll from swine flu
in India is driving some people to buy remedies made of cow-
urine extract, clarified butter and herbal potions to ward off
the disease, as the government restricts Tamiflu and other drugs.

Since India reported its first swine flu death in the
western city of Pune on Aug. 3, more than 100 people have died
from the virus. The government is controlling access to Roche
AG?s Tamiflu antiviral to ensure hospital supplies in case of an
epidemic. Residents have switched to traditional Ayurvedic
healing, used for hundreds of years to boost immunity, as well
as unproven remedies being sold to take advantage of the
outbreak, doctors say.
?Everybody wants to make money,? said Dr. Kalyan Banerjee,
president of the Maharashtra Association for the Cultivation of
Science and former director of the National Institute of
Virology. ?The problem is basically of regulation. There is no
system. Everybody can say what they want.?
The emergence of unproven treatments underscores the
difficulty authorities face in controlling the new H1N1 virus in
a country where health-care spending ranks among the bottom 50
worldwide. Sales of traditional medicine in the nation are about
$1.6 billion annually and growing at as much as 12 percent a
year, according to a study by the health ministry?s National
Medicinal Plants Board.
The health ministry department that deals with traditional
medicines on Aug. 21 advised citizens with severe flu-like
symptoms to visit designated hospitals for testing and treatment
with drugs such as Tamiflu. The department said people with mild
or no symptoms can take traditional medicines to boost their
immunity.

Mind and Body

Annual flu epidemics result in about 3 million to 5 million
cases of severe illness, and about 250,000 to 500,000 deaths,
according to the World Health Organization.
Ayurveda, or science of life, is a holistic treatment that
seeks to align a person?s body, mind and emotions with the aim
of preventing illness. Fliers and e-mails promoting herbs and
other traditional remedies have circulated since the swine flu
deaths prompted authorities in the hardest hit cities of Pune
and Mumbai to shut schools, cinemas and malls.
?Ayurveda is effective against many diseases,? said Mohan
Rao, professor at the Center of social Medicine and Community
Health at the New Delhi-based Jawaharlal Nehru University. ?At
times of crisis, some people will try to do whatever they can to
make quick money.?
Go-Vigyan Anusandhan Kendra, a Nagpur, western India-based
not-for-profit organization that calls itself a researcher of
medicine based on cow products, said potions containing extracts
of cow urine can ward off the flu.

Dung Drug

?Our medicines are effective against chronic illnesses
such as tuberculosis and blood pressure and will strengthen the
immunity of a person,? said Gopal Vohra, a vaidya, or Ayurvedic
doctor, at Go-Vigyan Kendra. He said Panchyagavvya Ghrut, a
mixture that includes cow urine, dung, curd, milk and ghee are
among treatments by the group that can prevent the flu.
Other groups such as the New Delhi-based Dhyan Foundation,
which teaches yoga, is asking people to snort warm cow ghee, or
clarified butter, and massage their feet with mustard oil to
develop immunity against the flu strain.
?I have nothing against traditional medicine but I think
before anything can be prescribed to a patient, there should be
an adequate evidence to prove the claim,? Rahul Nagpal, head of
the pediatrics department at Max Healthcare hospital in Saket,
New Delhi, said by phone. Max Healthcare, a unit of Max India
Ltd., runs a chain of eight hospitals and clinics in New Delhi
and its suburbs.
State health ministers asked the federal government on Aug.
21 to ensure that unverified drugs aren?t sold.

Kerala Clinic

The number of patients seeking precautionary medicines has
increased 15 percent to 20 percent within the past two to three
weeks, said K. Anilkumar, an executive director at Kerala
Ayurveda Ltd., which processes herbal medicines and operates
Ayurvedic clinics. Sales at its stores have risen as much as 10
percent in the period, he said last month.
?Proper immunity has to be kept so that you do not catch
the disease,? Mandip Kaur, a lecturer at Gujarat Ayurved
University?s Institute for Post-Graduate teaching and research
in Ayurveda, said by telephone. ?In Ayurveda, we have many
drugs which make your system strong.?
Before swine flu claimed its first victim in India, the
nation?s Central Drug Standard Control Organization asked
officials to ensure Tamiflu and its generic versions are only
imported by the government.

Tamiflu Resistance

The drug was being sold at ?very high? prices according
to media reports, it said. Indiscriminate use of the antiviral
may result in the virus developing resistance, making the fight
against the disease tougher.
Common herbs such as tulsi, or holy basil, worshipped by
Hindus and commonly grown in many homes, have been used in
Ayurvedic treatments to fight ailments such as fever, cough and
the common cold.
?I?m drinking tulsi juice since I heard a neighbor was
suspected of getting swine flu,? said Manoj Gupta, a Delhi
resident. ?It?s natural to be a bit worried with all the media
reports that are coming in about the flu. Hopefully, this will
be able to protect me.?

NO MEDICAL ADVICES, ONLY SUPOSITIONS AND OPINIONS:

Does the vast masses there even know which and where are the pandemic treatment dedicated hospitals?
Could the low casta levels be transported easy and in time for the 2 day Tamiflu schedule. from all locations they are to the hospitals?
Will the masses of people without insurances be treated anyway?
Are ther present such mass Tamiflu doses?

If some of the above questions answers are no,
than traditional Ayurvedic healing are very welcomed.

From the public distribution media circuits public video/TV report documents, is visible that such Ay. practices have opticaly proved eficacy for many aplications.
Also, there are very old well experimented on their local fields herb/chem/massages, subsequently keeped in time to today, which receptures and treatment tecnics are purely readed from the original cards, and many times resolve many of their problems.

About other illnesses, ad example about some local treatment experts massage pressure tecnics, once I watch a sat-tape (Nat.Geog.?, or else) video report, how a perfectly sane goat was by an easy instant pressure be totaly quadroplegicaly immobilized by the treat master.
If such pressure will persist, the damage will surge in permanent, as a demonstration of spinal cord pressure problems illness - so at the very next moment, the man repositioned the fingers, and the goat stand up as before, without harm.

Probably Snowy could said much more on the subject, the above was only an example of some efective traditional healing methods, without prejudicing if it exists good ones for flus, and this flu.

For the many on the bottom line and without substantial money, probable the unproven remedies will be tried also, because they will have no alternatives, so a trying is better than nothing, at least until better options are not at hand for them.

The fact is that worldwide, mainly are implemented the same policy of basical absolutely free transporting/roaming/gathering/rooming, no real social distancing, no public places mask usage, highighting of the inevitability of a death percent suggested as seasonal like (when now media reports specs of 100x more from pandemic), no directives of "low pay or no pay but hired" if some folks must stay home longer in a quarantine, no early preventive closures of any kind nowhere, no basic (grassroot scientific well known) anti-infection measures, when tourists (especialy childrens/teens) travels and stays in conclamated hot infectious areas - no stoppings of visible ill people mainly, no special infectious schielding measures at arival airports when such opticaly illnessed tourists come back in many areas, even no barriering of the ill and relatives... when attended such tourists at the airport, mainly no enaugh special flu clinics or infectious special facilities for such flu patients (or the inner infected ones) when they came or present flu symptoms, especialy if not severe at the begining, re-direction of previous cited patients to GP's handling them without any masks and without special entering rooms for infectious patients - which further than will augment the spread exponentialy to all going at the GP, etc., ..., no safe vaccines (apart esigue quantities) after 4 months of pandemic insurgence, no clear and firm WHO standings about precise types of vaccine adjuvants to be used, nor about other details, ...

Is the above enaugh, or we will see in a future much more of it worldwide in the same way?

Is it so strange that many people doubts, when the main public authorities gived clear almost non-shielding instructions?
When were vaccant an self-commited worldwide main public upgrade release about the tricky questions?

Such doubts could (and probably would) came in a worst time of realy need for vaccines to spare lives.

If all is clear and transparent about the adjuvants, and vaccines, and the fantastic web stories are metro legends, the best way to clear up all, is to directly confrontate such wide fantasy claims with pure true scientific facts supporting the oposite of the claims, if this is possible ...

It is clear that no communication effort could change this if it will not include real true informations.

Press Democrat Editorial

It's increasingly difficult to reconcile official warnings that swine flu is spreading rampantly with official assurances that most of us aren't at great risk.

This past weekend, we learned about the sixth Sonoma County fatality. Victor Gene Delgado, a 14-year-old high school student, died a few days after being treated in a hospital emergency room.

County health officials say he had a ?pre-existing condition? that increased his risk. Victor's mother said he underwent open-heart surgery when he was three days old, had been in excellent health since and had been cleared by his doctor to play football.

Health officials also cited a pre-existing condition in the recent H1N1 death of Timothy Sturm, 39, of Petaluma. But his mild case of asthma wasn't enough to prevent him from participating in team roping, a rodeo event.

Their deaths further illustrate the threat posed by the pandemic, which has spread around the world in a matter of months. The World Health Organization predicts that within two years nearly a third of the world's population will have caught the swine flu.

But efforts to control it could be undermined by inexplicable fears about privacy expressed by Sonoma County's top public health officials, who won't say where outbreaks are occuring, or even confirm the identity of those who die. After the latest death, officials had next to nothing to say about any risk to other El Molino High students. The school wasn't officially notified until Monday.

This shouldn't need to be said, but there's nothing embarrassing about getting the flu.

It is, however, foolhardy to withhold word of outbreaks in schools, nursing homes or workplaces when that information would allow people to take precautions and reinforce the otherwise bland advice offered by public health officials: wash your hands frequently with soap and water, cover your sneezes and avoid contact with sick people (that is, if you know where they might be).

Dr. Mary Maddux-Gonzalez, the county's public health officer, said the virus is so prevalent that efforts to stop it from spreading, such as school or workplace closures, would have little effect. She also said that most people will have only minor or moderate symptoms. No doubt, she's right on both counts.

During the normal flu season, we're often told that infants, the elderly and those with depressed immune systems are at the greatest risk. But, as shown by the deaths of Victor Delgado and Timothy Sturm, swine flu is striking hard at the young and strong.

Those older than 64 appear to have more immunity because of previous flu exposure, and most cases have been reported in people under age 25, according to the county's latest guidance.

We're still waiting for a vaccine. Until then, we'll keep washing our hands. But let's treat this disease with some sunshine: Tell people what's going on.

FluTrackers was never created to "bash" world governments or to aide in conspiracy theories.

While we may take issue with various government responses to disease outbreaks we mainly focus on understanding what the government response is going to be and where they should be working to fill the "gaps" in their response. For our goal is to reduce morbidity and mortality, in any way we can.

Furthemore, during the past 3 years FluTrackers has been involved in various pandemic table top excercises that occured under the current and previous US administrations.

What's wrong with telling us now how they will respond??

Feds engage media on pandemic vaccine communication

Lisa Schnirring

Sep 3, 2009 (CIDRAP News) – In advance of the expected pandemic H1N1 vaccination campaign this fall, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) yesterday invited the media to join federal officials in a tabletop exercise to prepare for some possible communications challenges.

About 40 members of the national press took part in the Washington, DC, event, which included some online flu blogs and news services, as well as state and local public health officials. Representatives from several federal agencies participated.

Discussions during the three exercise modules were off the record so that federal officials could freely discuss their responses to potential communications problems.

Forrest Sawyer, a former news anchor with ABC and NBC, moderated the discussion. He said the exercise was designed to "pressure test" the response to communications issues that may arise as the vaccine campaign launches and moves forward.

Yesterday's event was HHS's seventh such pandemic communications tabletop exercise with the media. Past events featured fictional scenarios that revolved around H5N1 influenza. The last one, which was the first to include online media, was held in March 2008.

Before yesterday's exercise began, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said now that many schools are back in session, parents are starting to ask when the novel H1N1 vaccine will be available.

"Leveling with the public about the need to get the shot is very important," she said, adding that one communications challenge will be explaining baseline rates of health events such as neurological conditions and miscarriage so that the public will have accurate information to assess vaccine safety concerns.
Sebelius said the tabletop exercises have been very useful in the past and, for example, prompted efforts by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to further train its quarantine staff.

Many of the scenario discussions circled back to safety perceptions after the rollout of the immunization campaign. Other themes touched on the complexity of some of the pandemic flu health messages and how difficult it can be to portray risks.
After the exercise, several federal officials said the exercise was helpful. Jesse Goodman, the Food and Drug Administration's acting chief scientist and deputy commissioner for scientific and medical programs, said, "This reinforces that we can never communicate too much," The challenge is to clearly communicate complex issues, he said.

Bill Hall, news director for HHS, said, "The public wants a simple message, but nothing about flu is simple."
He said it was helpful for federal officials to see that safety topics kept cropping up during the exercise and that the risk perception discussions were productive. "If we can educate the public more on the nature of the risks, that may help us with behavior change."

Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said the tabletop exercise was helpful because it gave voice to the fears and risks that are staples of "real world public health." The media have to communicate the science part of the flu in that environment. "When you filet out and look at all of the uncertainties, you have a common appreciation for the difficulties we are facing," he said.
Bruce Gellin, MD, director of the National Vaccine Program at HHS, said the exercise was meaningful, not just for issues specific to the pandemic H1N1 vaccine, but for immunization issues in general.

As a frequent voice of the CDC at press conferences, congressional hearings, and public webcasts, Anne Schuchat, MD, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said she appreciated having the chance to spend a day mainly listening. "The more we understand your needs, the better we can respond to them," she told the media.

Re: Discussion - FluTrackers Invited to Washington D.C. to Media Session on H1N1

:tiphat:I was at the meeting, and am quite surprised at all the animosity about the "off the record" requirements. It was a gov't exercise, for how they will react to any emergencies that may crop up during the upcoming vaccination program. I guess I am not too surprised and I gave a careful and watchfull eye to the whole thing. Oh yeah, I took notes, drank water and listened intently as everyone did. I understand these feelngs of distrust, but must say it will only make a bad situation worse.

I intend to file my report soon, but it will not be a lot different that what you have seen already. It will be more in the spirit of "Mr. Treyfish goes to Washington".

They have to assume it will be as bad as you know it could be, and the gov't is doing everything it can, short of closing every school in America, to deal with it.
I think if the virus took a turn for the worse or did mix with a more serious strain, that would happen for sure. The one thing I can tell you, is these people, these public servants, these health officials, are not sittin on their hands or sleepin a whole lot. This should help you to remember that we are all in this together, and it cannot be stopped, but if we are lucky, through these exercises, less people will die and contingency plans can be made.

Thanks, Treyfish. As a neutral participant, with no political axe to grind, your observations and comments are especially relevant. It is good to know that everyone there was working towards an effective solution to communicating the complexities of an influenza pandemic to a complacent public that has been placated and "informed" with the two-minute sound bite.

Re: Discussion - FluTrackers Invited to Washington D.C. to Media Session on H1N1

Thanks for your perspective Treyfish! I think that anyone who has followed this flu closely (including government officials) is watchful, wary and concerned about how potentially dangerous this could ultimately be.

In my experience, public health officials do not have an ulterior motive. They are in the field (at generally low pay) because of a desire to protect the public health.

I'm not doubt that this is a case in Sonoma, and other high afected areas,
but I think many will frankly said that in much more world areas at this moment, the quantity of illnessed x 10 is yet very small compared to when 50% of the all world population will catch the flu.

So light decisions of copying such measures of NON closures to all world areas, will contribute to the more spreading to every community at this moment.

A logic decision in low afected communities could be postponing shools for at least a trimester, by which time a considerable dose of vaccines could be produced and released to who want's to be shielded by vaccinations.

The main change possibilities lies in the hands of infectious disease professionals, and other related meds, who could make a critical mass demand, of more prudent secure anti-spreading infectious measures in public facilities and places, which will than change the monolitic copy-paste patern of non-closures everywhere, in:
closures everywhere where numbers of clinical infected are low, and from mostly imported cases in an area community, until the vaccines came.

If the insistance of non-closures are sourced from a prediction that such non-drifted pandemic flu version will trespassing all the world before enaugh vaccines will be produced, so an infection is inevitable, it will be pretty to enlight the masses of such speculated reason.

But the reason for non-closures could be also mostly economicaly/social driven, and with small considerations to the actual <1% projected deaths.

Deaths which could be lowered by less mingling and pandemic vaccinations.
