* Clinic visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) remain elevated above historic averages for this time of year
* Pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) remains the predominant strain (98% of influenza positives) throughout the military health system (MHS)
* DoD now reports 6 pH1N1-associated deaths among Armed Forces Beneficiaries since 4-1-09

ARMY: Co-circulation of pH1N1 and adenovirus at Fort Jackson (SC) and Fort Leonard Wood (MO)
NAVY: Nothing new to report
MARINES: Continued co-circulation of pH1N1 and adenovirus type 4 at MCRD-San Diego (CA) and Parris Island (SC)
AIR FORCE: A pH1N1-associated death of a 69 year-old family member on 18 June 2009 was reported out of Hawaii. 44% of Air Force bases are experiencing weekly outpatient ILI at levels above the five-year average

Laboratory Summary
USAFSAM: Investigators have published findings from recent AF Academy outbreak investigation. 58% of all processed samples from the past week have been positive for influenza
NHRC: Recruit training centers experiencing substantially elevated febrile respiratory illness rates include Fort Benning (GA) and MCRD-Parris Island (SC) NHRC was able to isolate pH1N1 from tissue samples of two recent active duty deaths
USACHPPMEUR: No report

Week 41

* No additional pH1N1-associated deaths among Armed Forces beneficiaries were reported this week
* Clinic visits for ILI continue to rise in all age groups throughout the military health system (MHS)
* Pandemic H1N1 (pH1N1) remains the predominant strain (98% of influenza positives) throughout the MHS
* Genetic characterization of pH1N1 viruses in DoD have shown almost no divergence from strain A/California/7/2009

ARMY: Fort Jackson (SC) reported five hospitalizations among basic military trainees this past week; all have recovered
Camp Zama (Japan) reported a large spike in ILI with over 100 absences through the local DoD school system
NAVY: No update at time of report
MARINES: No update at time of report
AIR FORCE: Thirty-six percent of all Air Force bases are currently experiencing increases in outpatient ILI
Seven new Air Force hospitalizations from six sites have been reported this past week

Laboratory Summary
USAFSAM: Molecular characterization of 13 pH1N1 viruses from CONUS and OCONUS sites shows almost no divergence from (A/California/7/2009)
NHRC: Substantially elevated febrile respiratory illness (FRI) rates have been reported from Lackland AFB (TX), NRTC Great
Lakes (IL) and Fort Benning (GA); all are currently experiencing co-circulation with pH1N1 and adenovirus type 4
USACHPPMEUR: All influenza-positive cases from EUCOM over the past week are pH1N1
Submitting sites primarily include Landstuhl (Germany) and Rota (Spain)
NAMRU-3: Molecular characterization from four pH1N1 viruses collected from deployed US service members in Southwest Asia are almost identical to the A/California/7/2009 vaccine strain
