A student at Metropolitan State College of Denver died Thursday of a suspected case of bacterial meningitis, and college officials want students to know the symptoms and seek treatment immediately if they become ill, said Steve Monaco, director of health services at the Auraria campus.

The Metro State student became sick and called his parents, who took him to an area hospital where he later died.

Officials have not released the name of the student, but Monaco said he lived in an off-campus apartment and attended one class at Metro State. The 26 other students in the class met with health officials Thursday to discuss symptoms and precautions.

A second metro-area youth has died from bacterial meningitis.

Jefferson County spokeswoman Lynn Setzer said Friday that a senior at Dakota Ridge High School died Thursday morning from the infection.

A Metropolitan State College of Denver student died from bacterial meningitis on April 8.

Jefferson County schools sent a letter home to parents in the Dakota Ridge community Thursday informing them of the death. The letter included information on meningitis and measures parents can take as precautions. The student's name was not released.
