Denmark - HP H5N8 detected in backyard poultry

Cases of bird flu in Danish flock

Food Administration announces that it has found the first case of the serious bird flu H5N8 in a Danish poultry.

nov 21 2016

Tthe first case of the serious bird flu H5N8 in Danish poultry has been found. These are about 30 ducks in a hobby flock at Aalsgaarde in North Zealand.
It is confirmed by the Food & Drug Administration on Monday morning, they received final test results from the National Veterinary Institute.

The samples originated from a backyard poultry farm in the village Skibstrup by Aalsgaarde in North Zealand. Here died over the weekend about a third of the approximately 30 ducks in the flock.

The tests show that it is the same type of bird flu, which the past ten days was found in Danish wild birds in several places in the country, particularly along the Baltic coast.

To have found bird flu in a Danish hobby flock could have major implications for Danish exports of poultry meat, says deputy head of the Food Administration veterinarian Stig Mellergaard according to a press release.

There have been no new outbreaks of avian influenza in poultry in Denmark since the outbreak of avian influenza detected in a backyard poultry flock on 21 November 2016. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administration has implemented the control measures in accordance with the European Union?s Council Directive 2005/94/EC. The Danish Veterinary and Food Administrations final report on the outbreak is now publicly available at: www.dvfa.dk. The report contains a description of the control measures applied including stamping out, cleaning and disinfection, establishment of protection and surveillance zones, screening in zones and the Danish surveillance programmes for avian influenza in poultry, other captive birds and wild birds. According to the requirements in Article 10.4.3 of the Terrestrial Animal Health Code, Denmark has regained its status as an avian influenza free country on 22 February 2017.
