Denmark - Covid-19 Cases - 19,216 cases, 629 deaths?

https://www.straitstimes.com/world/...s-first-patient-death-has-827-confirmed-cases

COPENHAGEN (REUTERS) - The first death of a person infected with coronavirus was confirmed in Denmark on Saturday (March 14), when an 81-year old patient died in a hospital in Copenhagen, the city's health authorities said.

The death comes after the government this week took drastic steps to curb the spread of the virus, including shutting all schools and universities and sending home all public sector workers with non-critical jobs.

In an unprecedented move, the Nordic country also shut its borders on Saturday to most foreign visitors for a month.

The figure has increased by 37 since the previous update yesterday morning.

And while the number of new cases seems to be tailing off, experts estimate that there are a significant number of unregistered cases across the country.

Denmark also experienced its first coronavirus-related death yesterday – and 81-year-old who was already admitted to hospital with other serious health issues.

Currently, 23 people are being treated for the coronavirus in hospital, including four in intensive care and two in critical condition.

Denmark confirms third death of coronavirus patient
An elderly patient died in Copenhagen on Sunday after contracting the coronavirus, officials confirmed.

The elderly patient at Copenhagen's Herlev Hospital had already been admitted suffering from other illnesses, according to a report by Danish state broadcaster DR.

The death is the second to take place at the hospital, following the death on Saturday of an 81-year-old patient who had also been admitted for other serious illnesses.

On Thursday night, an 80 year old in North Jutland was found to have been infected with the coronavirus after dying from a heart attack. Authorities have not yet officially recorded that death as due to coronavirus....

According to the latest figures from the State Serum Institute (SSI), there has now been 960 confirmed coronavirus cases in Denmark.

But SSI maintains that the number of unregistered cases could be far higher – up to 100 times higher in fact.

So based on that premise, 90,000 Danes could already be infected.

In a bid to gain an overview of the number of people infected in Denmark, SSI is working on a new system that involves a home test.

Meanwhile, the number of cases in the Faroe Islands continues to skyrocket.

Yesterday there were 18 cases on the island, but today’s figures revealed a sharp increase to 47

Denmark will start offering take-home kits to collect samples to test for the new coronavirus, in order to get a better view of its spread, health authorities said on Wednesday.

"In this situation we have the challenge that people who have upper-airway infections should not go to the GP," Tyra Grove Krause of the health agency SSI told AFP.

SSI, which operates under the health ministry, is responsible for the surveillance of infectious diseases.

While China, Italy, Western Europe, Iran and South Korea have generated the most headlines for the explosion in cases, Scandinavia — Sweden, Norway, Iceland and Denmark — is battling an unmatched surge. As of March 22, Iceland, with a population of 350,000, has recorded 568 cases; Norway, with a population of 5.3 million, has had 2,257 cases; Denmark, with a population of 5.6 million, has had 1,512 cases; and Sweden, with a population of 10 million, has had 1,934 cases. Together, the four countries, with a population of 21.3 million — that of Florida — had, as of Saturday, reported a total of 6,271 cases. That’s more than double America’s current per capita rate of infection, and three times that of China. If one compares individual countries, a citizen of Iceland has a 60 percent higher chance of contracting the virus than a counterpart from Italy, according to the latest rates.

COPENHAGEN - A group of Danish entrepreneurs have started a charity network that stands ready to make up to 20,000 protective visors a day using 3D printers, in an attempt to meet rising demand from doctors and nurses combating the coronavirus outbreak.

With hospitals in Denmark and other countries stretched as they treat a rising number of patients infected with the coronavirus, traditional supply chains have failed to meet global demand for facial masks and other protective gear.

"The global supply chains are broken, so we're not capable of getting the material or products that we need ... so we need to do something else," said Frank Rosengren Lorenzen, chief executive of Danish AM Hub, a lobby group that started the initiative.

More than 250 printers around Denmark are currently part of the project that at full capacity can produce up to 20,000 protective visors a day, according to Lorenzen. 3D printing produces three dimensional solid objects based on digital drawings.

The initiative started after the Danish Medicines Agency urged companies to come up with ideas on how to obtain extra protective equipment such as visors, face masks and hand sanitizer.

"It's a totally different thing to streamline your production and to think fast when you 3D print," said Simon Bergh, an engineer at 3D Printhuset in central Copenhagen.

"Normally 3D printing is for small productions, tests or prototypes and now we have to go up in production, so it's more about optimizing the actual speed of the production," he said.

Bergh said he produced 60 masks on Tuesday using six 3D printers, but each machine can produce up to 12 per hour.

Denmark had registered 34 deaths as of Wednesday with 350 coronavirus patients currently hospitalized.

STOCKHOLM — When the coronavirus swept into the Scandinavian countries, Norway and Denmark scrambled to place extensive restrictions on their borders to stem the outbreak. Sweden, their neighbor, took a decidedly different path.

While Denmark and Norway closed their borders, restaurants and ski slopes and told all students to stay home this month, Sweden shut only its high schools and colleges, kept its preschools, grade schools, pubs, restaurants and borders open — and put no limits on the slopes.
