Tonight we experienced a denial of service attack.

Our email was purposely overloaded to crash the server.

We have disconnected our email account through the FT server.

Usually, denial of service attacks are just directed against the site (and come very fast for long periods of time). E-mail is usually the subject of spam, which is designed to get info or gain access.

Why do you think it was a denial of service attack?

United States Computer Emergency Readiness Team defines symptoms of DoS attacks to include:

* unusually slow network performance (opening files or accessing web sites)
* unavailability of a particular web site
* inability to access any web site
* dramatic increase in the number of spam emails received

I frequently get spam e-mail attacks to recombinomics, because e-mail with the wrong address (anything@recombinomics.com) is redirected. These spam messages are clearly attempts to get the recipient to click on an attachment or link. They are VERY common (had one yesterday morning), but really are not intended to deny service (and anyone can modify wikipedia entries)
