Dengue - Multistate (world) - Monitoring seasonal epidemics

Opening date: 20 April 2006 Latest update: 28 February 2013

Epidemiological summary

Europe: There have been no reports of confirmed autochthonous dengue infections in Europe in 2013, besides the dengue outbreak in Madeira.

Asia: As of 21 February 2013, Cambodia, Lao PDR and Singapore have reported more dengue cases in 2013 than 2012 for the same time period, according to WHO. The recent trend continues to decline in Cambodia.

Australia and Singapore are seeing an increase in cases. In other parts of Asia, the Department of Disease Control in Thailand has reported more than 5 000 dengue cases since the start of the year, a five-fold increase from the same period in 2011. In India, recent figures from the Health Ministry show a significant rise in the overall incidence of dengue from 18 860 cases in 2011 to 49 606 in 2012.

Latin America: In Central America, Mexico is reporting increased dengue activity across most states. In South America, Brazil is experiencing very intense dengue activity so far this year. The total number of dengue cases has almost tripled according to official figures, with more than 200 000 people infected with dengue fever in the first seven weeks of 2013 compared to around 70 000 during the same period last year.

Paraguay, Ecuador, Venezuela and Argentina all reported an upward trend of cases this week. Health authorities in Montevideo, Uruguay, confirmed a second case of imported dengue but according to media reports the country still remains free of indigenous dengue cases.

The Caribbean: There is no new update on the dengue situation in Puerto Rico.

The Pacific: Health authorities in the Solomon Islands are working closely with WHO to prevent any further increase of dengue fever in the country after recording up to 223 suspected cases in Honiara alone. New Caledonia continues to see sustained dengue activity.

Africa: According to the media, an outbreak of dengue fever in northern Kenya is drawing attention to the need for improved health services in some of the country?s most remote communities. Since the outbreak started in 2013, local health officials have reported around 300 cases and three suspected deaths in Mandera District (North Eastern Province), along the Ethiopian and Somali borders.

ECDC assessment

ECDC monitors individual outbreaks, seasonal transmission patterns and inter-annual epidemic cycles of dengue through epidemic intelligence activities in order to identify significant changes in disease epidemiology.

Of particular concern is the potential for the establishment of dengue transmission in Europe. Before the current outbreak in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, local transmission of dengue was reported for the first time in France and Croatia in 2010. Imported cases are detected in European countries, highlighting the risk of locally acquired cases occurring in countries where the competent vectors are present.

Actions

ECDC has published a technical report on the climatic suitability for dengue transmission in continental Europe and guidance for invasive mosquitoes? surveillance.
