Dengue mosquito is increasingly resistant
Study of UNESP in Rio Preto, and six other cities shows that insecticides should be used sparingly

Research conducted by the UNESP Botucatu shows that excessive use of insecticides applied by both the municipalities and the home can cause a genetic resistance in the mosquito Aedes aegypti, which transmits dengue, against its effects.
The study collected mosquito larvae and seven cities in S?o Paulo, including Black River, with different levels of incidence of dengue. The field research was also made by the university in Ara?atuba, Presidente Prudente, Marilia, Campinas, S?o Sebasti?o and Santos.
We performed a genetic mapping of 95 different mosquito born in selected municipalities. It was also made a study of how organisms respond to larval insecticide. There were about 150 larvae coming from each city. By analyzing their organism was discovered that the most resistant to the insecticide showed increased activity of the esterase group of enzymes capable of neutralizing the poison.
In the mapping phase, each group of mosquitoes showed a varied genetic material, which means there is little mixing between its various populations. Genetic differences also indicate that the insect develops resistance to the insecticide depending on their exposure to the poison. "The important thing is to use the insecticide moderately coupled with some care as not to leave standing water," says researcher Maria de Lourdes Macoris Grace, coordinator of the state.
Currently Sucen (Superintendency for Endemic Disease Control) checks the resistance of insects to poisons used by local governments. Whenever it detects a high resistance index, the poison is replaced. In Black River this has happened. In 2003 the pyrethroid insecticide was replaced by organophosphate, still used today.
Breteau Index
The index measures the larval density of Aedes aegypti and directs the actions of field control and prevention of dengue. The Breteau is held every year, always in January, July and October.
The main types of breeding sites are found bottles, tires, plant pots and dishes. For the index can be successfully measured is important that health workers are received in homes throughout the city.
In the region of Black River, works like this help to reduce cases of the disease. In 2010, 35,985 cases were recorded in the region. Last year, the number dropped to 3,651.
