21 chikungunya cases reported in Goa

Blood samples taken in January first week

Panaji: In the first week of January, of the 43 blood samples tested for chikungunya, 21 tested positive, according to health officials in Goa.

Eight cases each were tested positive in North coastal village of Siolim and port town of Vasco in south Goa.

During the year 2009, out of the 1,525 blood samples tested for chikungunya, 685 tested positive. The areas worst affected were Quepem, Canacona, Vasco and Shiroda in south Goa, and Siolim and Panaji in the north.

During the same period, a total of 1,438 samples were tested for dengue out of which 277 were reported positive.

The areas that were affected the most were in port town of Vasco, said health officials.

The migrant labourers continued to be the single dominant carrier of malaria during the year 2009.

A total of 5,056 malaria cases were detected and treated in the State. Out of these cases, 4,448 cases are amongst the migrant labour force.

Of the 1,056 cases of falcipairum malaria, 960 were migrant labourers.
